📋 About This Mod
These are my optimized engine.ini and usersettings.ini files, which I fine-tuned while playing through the entire game. Now that I've finished Gothic, I'm sharing my final configuration for those who are just getting started.
These are my optimized engine.ini and usersettings.ini files, which I fine-tuned while playing through the entire game. Now that I've finished Gothic, I'm sharing my final configuration for those who are just getting started.
Installation:
Paste both files into:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\G1R\Saved\Config\Windows\Engine.ini must be keep to "read only".
The results in the screenshots are without DLSS and framegen.
If you are using an Nvidia GeForce card, the best way to eliminate ghosting is to enable DLSS Native and to disable frame generator.
What changes:
- []Optimized shadows – not too heavy, but no pixelated either[/]
r. Shadow. ScreenSpace=0
r. ShadowQuality=3
r. Shadow. CSM. MaxCascades=3
r. Shadow. MaxResolution=1536
r. ContactShadows=1
- []Clouds – turned off for performance. Honestly, I didn't even notice their absence[/]
- []View Distance – set to default balance. You can reduce this further if you need an extra performance boost.[/]
- []No Tall Grass – I don't like tall grass in games, and it's much more comfortable to play without it. This setting does not affect bushes or trees.[/]
grass. DensityScale=0
foliage. DensityScale=0
- []Other engine tweaks:[/]
r. Lumen. HardwareRayTracing=0
r. Lumen. Reflections=0
r. SSR. Quality=1

BloomIntensity=0. 000000
AmbientOcclusionIntensity=0. 000000
DepthOfFieldIntensity=0. 000000
SharpeningIntensity=0. 100000
ExtraInteriorExposure=0. 500000
WindQuality=0. 000000In-Game Settings Guide
With these tweaks applied in engine.ini, you can safely drop your in-game settings to almost minimum. You won't lose visual quality, but you will get a significant performance gain:
sg. ResolutionQuality=100
sg. ViewDistanceQuality=0
sg. AntiAliasingQuality=0
sg. ShadowQuality=1
sg. GlobalIlluminationQuality=0
sg. ReflectionQuality=0
sg. PostProcessQuality=0
sg. TextureQuality=4
sg. EffectsQuality=0
sg. FoliageQuality=0
sg. ShadingQuality=0
sg. LandscapeQuality=0VRAM & Textures Note:
On an 8GB GPU, the game allocates only about 5GB of VRAM with these settings.
Framerate Recommendation:
FrameRateLimit=60. 000000Even on high-end hardware, there are areas in the colony where the frame rate drops to 60. To keep your GPU running cooler and to ensure stable input lag, I recommend limiting the game to 60 FPS.
Known Issues
If the glowing hair issue bothers you, just install this Bald Hairstyle mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/gothic1remake/mods/133?tab=files&file_id=427
This is a consequence of the low global illumination settings.
