MeFe's FogTuner

MeFe's FogTuner is a configurable fog control mod for Gothic 1 Remake. It lets you tune the game's fog instead of simply removing it.

The goal of this mod is to make the image clearer without making the world look flat. Vanilla fog can sometimes look too milky and reduce visibility too much. On the other hand, mods that completely remove fog can make the scene lose depth, atmosphere and distance separation.

This mod gives you control over the main fog layers, so you can reduce the heavy vanilla haze while still keeping some atmosphere.

What does it control?

Global Fog / ExponentialHeightFog

This is the main fog layer that limits visibility distance. If the game looks like it has too much general haze or a "milky" look, this is usually the most important setting.

Fake Clouds

These are fake cloud/fog planes, mostly visible as distant cloud banks over mountains and far scenery. They are separate from the main global fog and can still be visible even when other fog layers are reduced.

Volumetric Fog

This controls the game's volumetric fog density through the global material parameter collection. It mainly affects animated low fog, ground fog, fog around water and similar atmospheric volumetric effects.

Multiplier-based system

FogTuner does not replace the game's weather and time-of-day systems with fixed values.

Instead, it uses multipliers.

That means the game can still control fog through weather, time of day and other internal systems, while FogTuner scales the final values.

1. 00 = vanilla value

0. 50 = 50% of the game's original value

0. 00 = remove that controlled layer

2. 00 = twice the game's original value

The mod also has separate day and night multipliers. I added this because I could not find one single fog value that looked good both during the day and at night.

In general, I recommend using higher fog values at night than during the day, because fog is less visible when there is less light.

Zero Mode

FogTuner includes a global Zero Mode.

ZeroMode=true forces all controlled fog layers to 0.

This can remove more fog than simple fog removal mods, because it also affects the Fake Clouds layer.

Important: the per-layer Enabled=true/false settings do not mean "turn this fog off in the game". They mean "allow FogTuner to modify this layer".

If you want to remove all controlled fog, use:

ZeroMode=true

If you want to effectively remove only one layer, set that layer's day/night multipliers to 0. There is no separate per-layer full removal mode beyond using 0 multipliers.

Configuration

Configuration file:

MeFe_FogTuner\Scripts\FogTuner.ini

Console commands are also described inside the config file.

Main user settings:

ZeroMode=false

Forces all controlled fog layers to 0 when set to true.

DayStartHour=7. 0

DayEndHour=18. 0

TransitionMinutes=60. 0

Controls the custom day/night multiplier system used by the mod.

With the default settings:

Morning transition starts at 07:00.

Evening transition starts at 18:00.

* Each transition lasts 60 in-game minutes.

GlobalFogEnabled=true / FakeCloudsEnabled=true / VolumetricFogEnabled=true

Allows FogTuner to modify that fog layer.

This does not mean the layer is enabled or disabled in the game itself. It only controls whether the mod is allowed to scale that layer.

GlobalFogDayMultiplier=0. 40 / GlobalFogNightMultiplier=0. 80

FakeCloudsDayMultiplier=0. 25 / FakeCloudsNightMultiplier=0. 80

VolumetricFogDayMultiplier=0. 60 / VolumetricFogNightMultiplier=0. 80

Day and night multipliers for each fog layer.

1. 00 is vanilla.

0. 00 effectively removes that layer while the mod is controlling it.

Higher values increase fog compared to vanilla while lower values do the opposite.

The default values are tuned for my personal taste. They reduce the heavy daytime haze while keeping more fog at night and during morning/evening(still less than vanilla tho).

FakeCloudsTransitionStepIngameMinutes=15. 0

Controls how often Fake Clouds update their day/night transition value, in in-game minutes.

Fake Clouds are the most performance-sensitive p
