Saurianne's Endemic Echoes

Something I made to get back into the swing of modding, four new barn animals.

The animals here are all irl recently-extinct species of wild animals (meaning they were all Holocene extinctions; the most recent of these went extinct ~130 years ago, and the least recent thousands of years ago), native to various islands around the world:

• []The Rodrigues Saddlebacked Tortoise (Cylindraspis vosmaeri) was one of two giant tortoises endemic to the island of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean. Its extinction around 1800 was caused in large part by sailors exploiting them for meat and introduced species eating their eggs and young. A major ecosystem engineer, in modern times the related Aldabra tortoise has been introduced to Rodrigues to fill the niche they left empty. As for the Stardew version, it produces tortoise eggs in the fall.[/]

  []Law's Diving Goose (Chendytes lawi) was, despite the name, a giant marine duck native to what is now Southern California, which nested on the Channel Islands just off the coast. It went extinct sometime around 800-250 BCE, after surviving about 8,000 years as a food source for the resident humans. Despite a marine diving lifestyle very similar to modern seaducks, Chendytes was most closely related to modern dabbling ducks such as the mallard. This version produces eggs in the spring.[/]

  []The Malagasy Hippoptamus was a pygmy hippo endemic to Madagascar. There were three known hippo species on the island; this one reflects the most terrestrial, Hippopotamus madagascariensis (note this genus placement is contested). While they seem to have gone extinct about 1,000 years ago, Malagasy folktales of very similar creatures persist and have led some to suspect the Malagasy hippos may have survived longer than the fossil record indicates. Notable examples of such creatures include the laloumena, for which one of the other hippo species is named and which is also the Malagasy word for hippo, and the kilopilopitsofy, which inspired the appearance of this version as it was described as dark-colored and having floppy ears. The hippos in this mod produce baobab fruit in the summer.[/]

  []The Warrah (Dusicyon australis), also called the Falkland Islands Wolf, was the only native land animal of the Falkland Islands in the southern Atlantic. Its closest living relative is the maned wolf. Going extinct in the 1870s, Charles Darwin described the warrah in his journals some 40 years before and feared for its extinction then; though naturally unafraid of humans, it was eradicated as settlers on the islands considered it a threat to their sheep. This version produces foxberries, a native plant of the islands, in winter.[/]
