🔄 New Vegas Versions & Advanced

A complete New Vegas modding guide.

Fallout: New Vegas is a 32-bit game frozen at version 1.4.0.525 — there are no more official updates, which is actually good for modding (stable target). xNVSE is the actively-maintained fork of the original NVSE; most modern mods require it plus JIP LN. Always match xNVSE to your game version (the current xNVSE targets the final 1.4 build).

ENB exists for New Vegas but is old and finicky — the game engine is 2010-era and ENB causes black screens, water flickering, and instability on modern drivers. For most players, Realistic Wasteland Lighting + a texture pack looks better with far less risk. If you do use ENB, install the correct d3d9.dll and disable in-game water displacement to avoid the flickering bug.

Animation mods (weapon poses, idles, killmoves) may need xNVSE and a behavior mod like kNVSE or the appropriate animation framework. If characters T-pose or animations break, check the mod's xNVSE and plugin requirements, and re-run any required animation tools.

Removing a scripted mod mid-playthrough leaves orphaned scripts that can corrupt saves — FNV is especially prone to save bloat. Uninstall in a safe interior cell, save, then remove the mod. Clean the save with the Save Cleaner (or FNVEdit's script cleaner). Never remove quest mods mid-quest.
