⚠️ New Vegas Mod Troubleshooting
⚠️ Troubleshooting
Game crashes on launch (CTD)
Missing xNVSE, wrong exe, or a load-order conflict. Verify xNVSE files are in the game root (not Data). Disable mods one by one to isolate. Run LOOT to check missing masters.
NVSE not running
You launched FalloutNV.exe instead of nvse_loader.exe. Always launch through the NVSE loader, or configure your mod manager to use it.
Micro-stutter / choppy framerate
Install New Vegas Tick Fix (NVTF). Set iPresentInterval=0 in Fallout.ini and cap FPS to 60 in NVTF to avoid physics bugs.
Game only uses 2GB RAM / out of memory
You didn't run the 4GB Patcher. Apply FNV 4GB Patcher to FalloutNV.exe — the 32-bit game needs it for modded play.
Purple or missing textures
Missing mesh/texture files — usually a bad install or wrong mod version. Reinstall the correct version.
Water flickering (NVIDIA)
Known engine bug on NVIDIA. In Fallout.ini set bUseWaterDisplacements=0, or use a water-fix mod.
"Too many plugins" / 140 plugin limit
FNV has a hard limit of ~139 active plugins (255 total, minus base game + DLC). ESL-flag plugins with xEdit, merge small mods, or cut down.
Random CTD with no error
Install NVAC (New Vegas Anti Crash). Avoid heavy script spam, and check LOOT for conflicts.
Save game bloats / corrupts
FNV save bloat is real. Avoid quest mod churn, clean with Save Cleaner, and don't remove scripted mods mid-run.
Crash after loading a save
A mod was removed or changed. Load an earlier save, or use a clean-save procedure before uninstalling scripted mods.
ENB black screen
ENB/driver mismatch on the old engine. Update ENB binary, or remove ENB and use Realistic Wasteland Lighting instead.
NPCs T-pose / animations broken
Missing animation framework or xNVSE plugin. Check the mod's requirements and re-run any animation tools.
Audio crackling / no sound
Old engine audio bug. Install an audio fix mod, or set your audio device to 44100Hz / disable surround.
Menu/HUD text missing
Missing UIO. Install User Interface Organizer and reinstall the HUD mod.
Crash in specific areas (Repconn, The Strip)
A mod conflicts in that cell. Inspect with FNVEdit, disable area-specific mods, or install a stability pack.
🖥️ Windows-Specific Issues
Game in Program Files
UAC blocks mod writes. Move FNV to C:\Games (Steam: move the library) or run your mod manager as admin.
OneDrive syncing saves
FNV saves to Documents\My Games\FalloutNV. Disable OneDrive sync for Documents.
Fullscreen stutter
Disable fullscreen optimizations on FalloutNV.exe properties.
Defender flags NVSE/4GB patcher
Add your FNV folder as an exclusion in Windows Security.
🟢 NVIDIA-Specific Issues
Water flickering
Set bUseWaterDisplacements=0 in Fallout.ini, or install the water-fix mod.
ENB black screen
ENB/driver mismatch on the old engine. Update ENB or remove it.
Micro-stutter
NVTF + cap FPS to 60. Disable V-Sync in-game and use driver-level sync.
Low FPS in The Strip
The Strip is CPU-bound. Lower draw distance, use Poco Bueno textures, and disable ENB there.
🔴 AMD-Specific Issues
ENB performs worse on AMD
Use Realistic Wasteland Lighting + a texture pack instead of ENB on AMD GPUs.
Low FPS in The Strip
CPU-bound regardless of GPU. Lower draw distance + Poco Bueno textures.
Driver crashes
Clean-install the driver with DDU.
