📋 About This Mod

Tired of creating Ghost Camps just to squeeze out more XP by executing every soulless NPC you come across? If yes, then look no further!

This mod fixes a major gameplay loop annoyance: min-maxing your character in Gothic by murdering every single 'helpless' and 'soulless' human NPC you come across just for their Execution XP. This mod rolls that Execution XP directly into the standard Defeat XP instead. Now, you can play normally and only execute people for flavor or to suit your hero's narrative, since execution will now grant 0 XP, rather than feeling forced into a total genocide run like a complete psychopath.

Crucial Warning #1 (Save files): This mod permanently alters save files because it modifies the NPC stats directly. You cannot just delete the mod folder to get rid of it. If you want to uninstall it later, you HAVE to follow the uninstallation steps below, or your save file will be permanently stuck with the modified values.

Crucial Warning #2 (Mid-Playthrough Installs): This mod will not grant you additional Execute XP if you have already "defeated" a human NPC prior to installing, because the game has already flagged them to not give you any more XP if you happen to knock them out again. If you install this mid-playthrough and try to execute those previously knocked out NPCs, this mod will essentially become a liability. You will get 0 XP for the execution and lose out on those points entirely.

The "Double-Dipping" Edge Case: The mod works perfectly on normal human NPCs that follow the "Alive -> Knocked Out -> Executed" rule. However, you might get extra XP on some story characters who are meant to die instantly. In vanilla, these NPCs never give Execution XP because you either cannot execute them whilst they are down, or the game simply kills them without giving you the option to perform execution. This mod will give you that XP upon their defeat or death anyway. If you are a strict purist who does not want a single point of extra XP from these edge cases, do not install this. This only happens because Alkimia actually populated the 'XPExecutedBounty' values for those NPCs behind the scenes!

In layman's terms

If Digger Jim gives you 50 XP upon being knocked out and 50 XP upon being executed, this mod will now grant you 100 XP upon mugging Jim and 0 XP on killing him.

If Thorus gives you 500 XP when knocked out, then this mod will also grant you his theoretical Execute XP, which is another 500 XP, for a total of 1000 XP. Since Thorus is one of those story characters who normally cannot be executed, that XP is otherwise unobtainable.

With Version 2, I have introduced two commands that allow you to toggle the mod on the fly:

disable_narrative_executionThis will force the mod to revert its changes back to vanilla. This will have no effect if the mod has already applied the vanilla changes.

enable_narrative_executionThis will force the mod to apply its own changes. This will have no effect if the mod has already applied the NarrativeExecution changes.

After executing a command, you will need to reload your save(s) for these changes to take effect and save again. There is no need to run the same command several times, as the toggle will persist as long as you do not exit the game.

It is possible to make these commands instantaneous, but I am strongly against mutating all NPCs at runtime to avoid crashes. It is much safer and more stable to perform these changes when NPCs are being loaded into the world.

These commands also do not modify the 'main.lua' file, in order to avoid performing input/output file operations, which can also lead to other issues and crashes at runtime.

Compatibility

Compatible with any mod that does not make modifications to 'XPKillOrDefeatBounty' or 'XPExecutedBounty' owned by the 'GothicNPCState'.
