📋 About This Mod
Fair warning: if you are sensitive to bright and flashing lights, you should NOT install this mod.
This mod improves the somewhat lacking storm weathers of the game by adding interactive lightning strikes around the player.
The mod has been completely remade from scratch in Redkit. This allowed me to improve probably the main "problem" of the old version, which is the weird looking vanilla lightning bolt meshes.
Those are now replaced by a particle based lightning bolt which has randomness to it, so it always looks different every time it spawns.
I think I managed to get it looking quite cool, but obviously everyone has to be the judge for themselves. Just like the old mod, I suggest to try it in game if you're interested, pictures don't really do it justice since it has quickly changing alpha values and lifetimes, so it flickers a lot and getting good looking screenshots is not that easy.
Also while the old mod had randomness with the bolt, by not spawning it sometimes, the new version has a "sky" bolt, which means it will spawn the bolt up in the sky, connecting two sky points. I think that was cool and it looks cool in game, so I kept it. This is also used during cutscenes and dialogues, to avoid bolts impacts creating problems.
Obviously with randomness in w2p, it comes also possible clipping problems, especially when there's high obstacles close to the bolt spawn. I can't do anything about that, sorry.
The landing FXs have also been remade and expanded. The old mod had only water and fire, this version has now material based impact FXs. I didn't work on those as much as I wanted, but I wanted to get the mod out so for now this is enough. If I get improvements on some, I'll update. I just created FXs for the most common materials I got during testing.
Some FXs have collisions, like impact rocks or even the main fire impact FX, which spawns smaller flames with its sparks.
I've also reused the igni emissive ground collision fx along with the decal for the ground impact, to simulate a bit of ground glowing hot after a bolt strike. (Thanks to Greg for the hint about how to use it. :) )
I've simplified the NPCs and player reactions quite a bit, I didn't want this to become a "gameplay" mod, but just a visual one. I made enemies get knockdown/burned/staggered if the bolts land close to them, while common NPCs will get scared and might run away from the point of impact. If the bolt lands further away, they will look at the point of impact.
Player is treated the same, knocked down if close or look at if far.
Also to clarify a question I got a lot in the comments, this mod only ADDS to the game vanilla storm FXs, it does no
