📦 Install Methods
1. Vortex (easiest)
- Create a free Nexus Mods account, download Vortex from the Nexus Mods website, and install it.
- Open Vortex, go to the Games tab, and click Manage on The Witcher 3. If it doesn't auto-detect, set the install path yourself (Steam is typically ...steamapps\common\The Witcher 3, GOG is ...GOG Galaxy\Games\The Witcher 3).
- On any mod's Nexus page click the Mod Manager Download button; Vortex pulls it into your Mods list without you touching the game folder.
- Enable the mod in the Mods tab, then click Deploy Mods. Vortex creates and populates the game's mods folder automatically.
- If the mod is a script mod, open Witcher Script Merger, point it at the game directory, and click Merge Scripts to combine any conflicting script files.
- Launch the game. If you get a script error window before the menu, run Script Merger again or disable the last mod you enabled and test again.
2. Manual install (works for any mod, no manager needed)
- Find your game directory: Steam is usually ...steamapps\common\The Witcher 3, GOG is ...GOG Galaxy\Games\The Witcher 3.
- Create a folder called mods inside the game directory if it isn't there already. This is where every mod folder goes.
- Download the mod with the Manual Download button on Nexus and extract the archive with 7-Zip or WinRAR.
- Inside the archive is a folder whose name starts with mod (for example modAutoApplyOils). Copy that whole folder into the game's mods folder.
- If the mod also ships a dlc folder (or a dlcmodXXX folder), copy its contents into the game's dlc folder — many item, enemy, and quest mods need this second part to work.
- For script mods, run Witcher Script Merger, set the game path, and click Merge Scripts so conflicting scripts get combined instead of erroring at launch.
- Launch the game and test. If it errors out, disable the mod by moving its folder out of mods rather than deleting it, so you can put it back later.
3. The Witcher 3 Mod Manager (W3MM)
- Download The Witcher 3 Mod Manager from Nexus Mods and run it.
- In W3MM's settings, point it at your game directory so it scans and lists the mods installed in the mods folder.
- Download mods with the Manual Download button on Nexus, extract them, and add the modXXX folder to W3MM's mod list (or drop it into the game's mods folder and let W3MM pick it up).
- Use W3MM's list to enable and disable individual mods, which is handy for testing which mod is causing a problem.
- Run Witcher Script Merger on the game directory afterwards to merge any script conflicts between the enabled mods.
- Launch the game. If something crashes, disable the offending mod from the W3MM list instead of deleting it so you can toggle it back while testing.
📦 Mod Managers
Most Witcher 3 mods install through Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 — they handle file placement and load order automatically. Manual install means dropping files into your game's mod/data folder.
