📋 About This Mod
What This Mod Does
================
Adds Cargo space to Storage Room and Cargo Habitats...at the cost of mass. And boy is it a cost.
Turns out, there is a mathematical formula Bethesda uses to calculate storage space vs mass. That formula is <storage> x 0. 21 = Mass. So...mass of anything adding storage space should be 21% of the space it adds. Why this formula was used, I have no idea. But I ran the numbers on 5 unshielded cargo cans of 5 different sizes, and it always worked out to 21%, give or take a few decimal points.
All of which means that, while Cargo Holds now add cargo space...they also add mass. A significant amount of it. Because they are much larger than cargo cans, Cargo Holds necessarily provide more cargo space. The 2x2 hold grants 2000 units. 2x3 Holds grant 2500 and 3x3 holds grant 3000 units of storage...and weigh in at an eye watering 625 units of mass.
Too heavy for your class A fighters, or light class B ships, for sure.
That's where Storage Rooms come in. Offering "only" 500 units of space, Storage Rooms clock in at only 105 units of mass. This makes them ideal for early game and small ship use. Especially since they likewise eliminate the need for external cargo cans.
As a small bonus, Engineering Bays are also more useful. With no change to mass, these bays offer a bonus 100 units of grav jump fuel. Maybe they store it there. Maybe having a crew member constantly monitoring engine systems, fuel mixtures and flow just makes ships more efficient. Either way, Engineering Bays are also useful!
What this mod does NOT do
======================
It does NOT change the interior of ANY hab.
This mod does not modify cockpits or landing bays in any way. So it should be compatible with the new mod that adds the option to manually open your bay doors on landing.
Installation
Drop it into the folder (I used c:\steam\steamapps\common\startfield\data). Enable with mod manager or the creations load order menu in game. I did the latter, for now.
Uninstalling
Make sure you have backed up save games. Otherwise, you're probably starting over. But just delete the file. or Disable in load order.
Future Plans
I may or may not rebalance existing engines, reactors and other modules. I am undecided as yet. And even IF I do, I will wait for Survival Modes (both vanilla and otherwise) to drop before doing so. I will also ALWAYS Ensure this Cargo/Storage/Engineering Bay only version remains available.
I am open to suggestions, as well.
Permissions
It's just game tweaks. Consider it a modder's resource. Use it. Tweak it. Base your own mods on it. Redistribute. Credit me if you feel like it, but it's not necessary.
