🔄 Skyrim Versions & Advanced

A complete Skyrim modding guide.

Three Skyrim versions exist. Special Edition (SE, 2016) is 64-bit and the default. Anniversary Edition (AE) is SE + Creation Club content with a bumped game version — it needs the matching "AE" SKSE build. Legendary Edition (LE, 2011) is the old 32-bit game with a separate mod ecosystem. SE mods do NOT work on LE, and SKSE/AE mismatches are the #1 cause of launch crashes.

ENB is post-processing — lighting, color grading, ambient occlusion, and depth of field. Install by dropping d3d11.dll and enbseries.ini into your game folder, then a preset's files on top. Tune VRAM with VideoMemorySizeMb in enblocal.ini. Pick a preset matched to your weather mod (Obsidian, Cathedral, NAT, etc.) or colors will be wrong. ENB is the single biggest GPU cost — skip it on low-end hardware.

Animation mods (combat, idles, creatures) need a behavior engine run after install. Nemesis is the modern choice (replaces FNIS for most setups). Install animations → run Nemesis → generate the behavior files. A T-pose or frozen NPCs means you forgot to run it, or the animation mod is incompatible.

Removing a scripted mod mid-playthrough leaves orphaned scripts that can corrupt saves. Best practice: uninstall in a safe interior cell, save, then remove the mod. Clean the save with FallrimTools (ReSaver) to strip orphaned scripts. Never remove quest mods mid-quest. When in doubt, start a new game for testing.
