⚠️ Troubleshooting

Game crashes on launch (CTD)

Missing SKSE64, wrong SKSE version, or a load-order conflict. Verify SKSE64 matches your Skyrim version. Disable mods one by one to isolate. Run LOOT to sort and check for missing masters.

"SKSE not running" / SkyUI fails to load

You launched SkyrimSE.exe instead of skse64_loader.exe. Always launch through the SKSE loader, or configure your mod manager to use it.

Purple or missing textures

Missing mesh/texture files — usually a mod installed for the wrong game version (SE mod on LE, or vice versa). Reinstall the correct version.

Two mods conflict / game behaves oddly

Both mods edit the same records. Use xEdit (SSEEdit) to inspect conflicts, or reorder in LOOT. Patches may exist for popular mod pairs.

Animations broken (T-posing)

You installed animation mods without running FNIS or Nemesis. Run the tool after installing or removing animation mods.

ENB too dark / washed out

ENB preset conflict with your weather mod, or a misconfigured enblocal.ini. Use a preset matched to your weather mod, or disable ENB and use ReShade.

Infinite loading screen (ILS)

Usually a mod conflict, too many mods, or a corrupted save. Disable recently-added mods, check LOOT for missing masters, or load an earlier save.

Low FPS / stutter with mods

Heavy ENB + 4K textures are the usual cause. Drop to a lighter ENB or 2K textures, lower shadow/draw distance settings, and close background apps.

"Missing master" / plugin disabled

A mod requires another plugin you don't have installed or enabled. Check the mod's requirements page, install the dependency, and enable it before the mod.

ENB not taking effect

ENB files (d3d11.dll, enbseries.ini) must be in the game root, not Data. Also check you don't have conflicting d3d11 files from another preset.

Mods installed but not showing in-game

The mod isn't deployed/enabled. In Vortex/MO2, make sure the plugin (.esp/.esm) is enabled and the mod is deployed. Some mods also need a new game.

Grey face bug (face/body mismatch)

A face texture/generated-face conflict between mods. Regenerate facegen in the Creation Kit, or install a face-gen patch for the NPC mod.

Game crashes when sprinting

A known Floating Subtitles bug — it crashes when subtitles are off (default). Turn on subtitles in Skyrim settings.

Crash when entering Solitude

Load-order conflict. Run LOOT to sort, and install Crash Logger SSE to generate a log for diagnosis.

Crash with Community Shaders

Engine Fixes is incompatible with Community Shaders and causes crashes. Remove Engine Fixes if using Community Shaders.

JContainers critical error on save load

An offending mod ships a broken JContainers version. Uninstall the mod, or use a patch for the Custom Skills Menu.

CTD on fast travel to a location

Update to the newer 2-part version of SSE Engine Fixes — older versions crash on fast travel.

CTD on launch / missing master

Open LOOT and check for missing master files. A disabled or missing required plugin crashes on launch.

Crashes near roads / terrain

Terrain or Synthesis patches conflicting. Disable Synthesis.esp and terrain mods one at a time to isolate.

Black screen entering Dragonsreach

A VR Address Library left installed on non-VR. Remove it if you are not playing in VR.

Infinite loading screen

Install SSE Engine Fixes (and Bug Fixes SSE, Scrambled Bugs). Also bisect your load order to find the culprit.

Infinite loading at main menu

Disable mods in halves (bisection) until the game loads, then narrow down the broken mod.

Purple / missing textures

Use More Informative Console to click the object and see which mesh is missing and which plugin provides it.

Purple ground textures everywhere

Disable Terrain Parallax Blending Fix if you don't need parallax — it conflicts with some terrain setups.

Bald heads + purple textures with NPC mods

NPC overhaul conflicts. Use NPC Plugin Chooser to manage overhauls and Asset Doctor to fix missing assets.

Missing meshes on unarmored NPCs

Run Bodyslide batch build and verify all Bodyslide requirements are installed.

SkyrimSE.exe missing

Verify game files in Steam, or copy SkyrimSE.exe from a backup into the game folder.

Anniversary Edition broke SKSE / mods

Back up SkyrimSE.exe and binkw64.dll, disable Steam auto-updates, and launch via SKSE only.

Bethesda update broke SKSE mods

A game update bumps the version and breaks SKSE. Wait a few days for the SKSE team to release a matching build.

Prevent Skyrim auto-updating to AE

Set Steam auto-updates to "only update when launching", and always launch through SKSE (which bypasses the launcher).

Crash when loading saves

For 1.6.640, install Backported Extended ESL Support if the crash log points to that memory address.

Crash on new game

Reinstall SSE Engine Fixes and confirm you have the version matching your Skyrim version.

Stutter in Whiterun

In NVIDIA Control Panel set Monitor Technology to "Fixed refresh rate" — G-Sync/VRR causes stutter in some areas.

Low FPS at main menu

Turn off SwapEffect in SSE Display Tweaks — it can tank menu FPS.

Stutter with Community Shaders

Disable heavy Community Shaders features like SSGI, screen-space shadows, and wetness effects.

Stutter during autosaves

Use Seamless Saving and AutoSave Manager to smooth out save-game hitches.

Stutter with NFF followers

Remove custom followers (Remi, Xelzaz, etc.) from Nether's Follower Framework — they carry their own frameworks.

Low FPS outdoors on a good PC

Floating-islands or dense-object mods (e.g. Nix's) can kill FPS. Disable them, or drop heavy mods like JK's Skyrim.

🖥️ Windows-Specific Issues

Game installed in Program Files

Windows UAC blocks mods and tools from writing there. Move Skyrim to a non-protected folder like C:\Games, or run your mod manager as administrator.

OneDrive syncing your saves

Skyrim saves to Documents\My Games\Skyrim — if OneDrive syncs Documents, saves can lock or corrupt. Disable OneDrive sync for the Documents folder.

ENB crashes on Windows 11

Older ENB binaries don't work with Win11's d3d11. Download the latest ENB binary for Skyrim SE.

Stutter from fullscreen optimization

Right-click SkyrimSE.exe → Properties → Compatibility → check "Disable fullscreen optimizations".

Windows Defender flags SKSE

Defender sometimes false-positives on SKSE and mod loaders. Add your Skyrim folder as an exclusion in Windows Security.

Washed-out colors (Auto-HDR)

Skyrim doesn't support HDR. Disable Auto-HDR for Skyrim in Windows display settings.

🟢 NVIDIA-Specific Issues

ENB black screen on launch

ENB binary vs NVIDIA driver mismatch. Update ENB to the latest binary, or disable fullscreen optimization on SkyrimSE.exe.

VRAM limit causing stutter

Set VideoMemorySizeMb correctly in enblocal.ini. On Legendary Edition (DX9) the 4 GB VRAM cap needs ENBoost.

G-Sync stutter in borderless

G-Sync + borderless window can stutter. Run fullscreen, or disable G-Sync for Skyrim in NVIDIA Control Panel.

Forced AA/AF fights ENB

NVIDIA Control Panel forced antialiasing/anisotropic filtering conflicts with ENB. Set to "Application-controlled".

Low FPS on RTX cards

Use an upscaler mod (PureDark's DLSS/FSR) for a big FPS gain on RTX cards. Or drop to a lighter ENB preset.

🔴 AMD-Specific Issues

ENB performs worse on AMD

ENB is historically NVIDIA-optimized and runs worse on AMD GPUs. Use ReShade presets instead, or a lightweight ENB.

Low FPS on Radeon cards

Use PureDark's FSR 2 mod for a big FPS boost on AMD cards.

Adrenalin forced settings conflict

AMD Adrenalin forced AA/AF/chill conflicts with ENB. Disable per-game overrides and let the game/ENB control it.

Driver-specific crashes

A bad driver can crash modded Skyrim. Clean-install the driver with DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).
