She was responding to a recurring dream that wasn't exactly a nightmare, but was always disconcerting.  Night after night, she was bucking awake, perspiring heavily, breathing hard, and her racing heart beating so loudly that she could hear her pulse in her ears.  She never had a problem recalling the dream.  She knew exactly what was happening.  She was being summoned by Nocturnal, the Dremora goddess of night and darkness.  Verity was a Nightingale, a Guardian of Nocturnal.  Months earlier, Nocturnal had awarded her the Power known as Agent of Stealth.  That had been Verity's choice, and she was delighted by her decision to ask for this particular Power.  That's why the lovely young thief was confused.  Why was she being summoned back to the Twilight Sepulcher?  It was a complete mystery.

The sultry voice in these murky dreams was always the same, and the way that the goddess phrased her command never varied. "Come back to me, Verity Kindle.  Yes, I am Nocturnal.  You know where to find me.  Come back to the Twilight Sepulcher.  Wait for me outside the door.  Wait for me, Verity Kimble....  Wait for me.... Wait for me...."

Tired and grumpy because it had taken her days and days of walking to reach the trail that led to the Twilight Sepulcher, Verity plodded onward.  She knew her way, could walk it in her sleep.  Her heart wasn't in this journey, for she really didn't want to meet Nocturnal again.  The Daedric goddess had scared the pee-wadden out of her during their first and only meeting.  Although she was frightened and apprehensive, she dared not stop walking up the trail.  A Guardian of Nocturnal dare not refuse a summons.  One didn't deny anything to any Daedric entity - not if one valued one's life and liberty.

Up ahead of Verity, hiding amongst the weeds and rock rubble that lay all about, three badly armed ne'er-do-wells watched with avid eyes as the lovely young blonde woman walked along the barely-used trail.  Alone.
