orelei Schmeisser was afraid of Maven Black-Briar, even though she'd worked for The Mistress, ever since she'd run away from home at the tender age of sixteen.  Now twenty-two and still working for the wickedest woman in Riften, Lorelei would do anything that The Mistress asked of her.  Well, almost anything.  She wouldn't kill for her boss.  She was, however, willing to make one of Maven's victim's wish that she was dead.  Under Maven's tutelage, Lorelei had become a specialist in an unusual practice.  She was Maven's go-to gal when The Mistress wanted someone to be publicly humiliated.  But only women.  Never men.

Just returned to town after a flying visit to Ivarstead – on Maven's orders – Lorelei was sitting alone at a table in the Black-Briar Meadery when Maul walked up to her table and announced, “The Mistress wants to see ya.  She's wearing her mad hat, so ya better hustle.  She wants ya to meet her at the Manor.”

At the time of her departure for Ivarstead, Lorelei had thought it odd that The Mistress had given her another job that conflicted with guarding that pair of snooty young women whom The Mistress was holding for ransom.  Knowing that asking questions of Maven was too-often dangerous, Lorelei had kept her concerns to herself.  When she'd left the Manor, the raven-haired Valkyrie had been confident that Maven's guards were capable of securing that helpless pair of aristocratic females.  So, at the moment, Lorelei's biggest fear was that The Mistress was in a rage over the late delivery of the
