 Maureen Denby's Backstory

Just days after Maureen was born, her parents realized that their first child had inherited her beautiful mother's ability to use magic.

"Philippe!  Philippe!  Come quickly!" twenty-year-old Veronica Denby called from their bedroom, urgently summoning her husband from the great room.  She'd placed the baby on their double bed to make it easier for her to change the infant's soiled diaper.  When she'd unwrapped the child's swaddling clothes she'd discovered a pair of tiny handprints charred into the linen fabric!

Sitting by the hearth and using the light cast by a pair of beeswax candles that burned from a tall iron candle stand that sat on the floor behind his favorite chair, Philippe immediately tossed today's issue of The Whiterun Times aside and rushed to his wife's assistance.  "What?  What?" he asked as he entered their bedroom, wrinkling his nose over the horrible aroma of green baby poo.

Her large hazel eyes focused upon the charred handprints, Veronica pointed at each of the scorched places and and said in a shocked tone of voice, "Look at this!  And look at this!  Our baby did that!"

The charred places caused Philippe to immediately inspect Baby Maureen's tiny legs for burns.  Nothing!  Not even a slight reddening of the skin.  There was more than Destruction Magic going on here.  There was also Restoration Magic involved.  Ho-lee cow!

Making eye contact with his visibly worried wife, the sturdy Whiterun Guard chuckled and shook his head in amazement.  "You know what this means, don't you, darling?" he asked her, his dark eyes smiling now.  Before she could answer he told her, "We're now raising a mage.  Not only can she use fire, she can heal herself.  Just like you."

Veronica was briefly stunned.  Then she had to laugh.  More times than she could count she'd heard her own mother say in exasperation, "Oh, Veronica!  Look at this mess!"  What made her laugh was the recollection of what Mama usually said next as she shook a finger at her: "Someday, I hope that you have a daughter who is just like you!"  This contretemps usually happened after a then-school-aged Veronica had made a hash of things while she'd been experimenting with her ability to make flames flow from her fingertips.  Usually when she'd been alone in her bedroom.  Sometimes, and more catastrophically, when she'd been alone in the barn.

Fortunately for Veronica and Philippe, Maureen was a sweet-natured child who wasn't given to using fire magic to wreak havoc whenever she didn't get her way.   The Denby's were of the same mind and were working in tandem to raise their children to think for themselves and to not follow the crowd.  In Maureen's case, the thinking
