ive-year-old Alysanne sat on her mother's lap and suffered under her mother's effort to comb her thick head of auburn-red hair.  It was early in the morning and the little girl was hungry.  She knew that she had a chore to do before she could have breakfast, and she was eager to get going.

“Be still!” her exasperated mother commanded sharply, rewarding her little girl's constant wriggling and heavy sighing with a whack of the large, tortoise shell comb that she was carefully using to remove the overnight snarls from her daughter's hair.

“But I don't want my hair this way, Mommy,” the pretty child whined, and not for the first time.  “I want a high-up ponytail.  Like Jasmine and Jonquil.”

Sigrid harrumphed as she went back to combing Alysanne's tangled hair.  “Jasmine and Jonquil don't have pointy ears,” she replied tartly, then blew a gust of breath out through her nose to punctuate her annoyance.

“So?” the little girl asked innocently.  “I like my ears.  They're different.  Nobody has ears like mine.”

That didn't make sense to Alysanne.  All of her playmates knew that she had pointy ears.  Her hair didn't really hide them, especially when she was roughhousing with the other kids, or when it was breezy outside.  Sometimes, she swept her hair behind her ears to keep it out of her face, like her friend Nikki always did.  None of her friends had ever picked on her because of her ears.  Most of them were disappointed that they didn't have pointy ears.

Suddenly presented with new information, Alysanne frowned in confusion.  “Does having pointy ears mean that I'm an Elf, Mommy?”

“No,” Sigrid told her firmly.  “What it means is that you have a tiny bit of Eleven blood in you.”

Intrigued, the little girl shifted so that she could look up at her mother's fac
