ineteen-year-old Charlotte Randolph met the official courier as the smartly uniformed lass came hustling up the front walk.  For weeks and weeks, Charlotte had been expecting a letter from the Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold. She was dying to learn if her request for admission had been accepted.  Or not.

“I've got a letter for you, if your name is Charlotte Randolph,” the pretty young woman said with a grin as she fished it from her leather pouch.

“You know who I am, Lily,” Charlotte replied, smiling back.  “Stop being silly.”

“The College of Winterhold, huh?” Lily remarked as she handed over the envelope.  “I had you pegged for a Mage.”

Charlotte chuckled but didn't rise to Lily's bait.  Charlotte wasn't any kind of a mage.  Yet.  She was, however, well on her way to becoming an excellent two-handed warrior.  What she really wanted was to become a Spellsword, like her favorite aunt, Lauren Randolph Bacall, her father's youngest sister.  Instead of learning Destruction spells like Auntie Laurie, Charlotte wanted to learn Restoration spells so that she could heal herself during a strenuous fight.  She preferred to use cold steel on her enemies, not hot spells.

The hopeful teen kept her bright blue eyes glued to the letter as she carefully read what the Arch-Mage had written.  Suddenly finding the words that she was dying to read, she whooped with joy.  “I got in!” she exclaimed, joyously waving the envelope and letter over her head.  “I've been admitted!  Yeah, buddy!”

Lily giggled and shot the redheaded lass a warm smile.  “Hey!  That's great,” she said as she headed off.  Lifting her hand in farewell, she said, “Congratulations, girlfriend!  Good luck!  Write to me when you get settled, huh?”

“Sure.  But you have to write me back.  You hear me, Miss Lily?” the newly minted college student replied with a giggle, then dashed toward the house.  She was eager to share her good news with her folks.

“What's all the commotion about?” her father asked with a grin that spoke volumes.  “Is the house on fire?”

“I've been admitted by the College, Daddy!” Charlotte exclaimed proudly as she rushed through the house, making a beeline over to where her father was sitting in his favorite chair.  Skidding to a halt before him, she handed over the letter.  Watching her father's face intently as he read the letter, she murmured, “Oh!   My!   Gaww!  I can't believe this is happening!”
