📋 About This Mod

This mod wouldn't be possible without DS2LightingEngine SotFS. It's amazing, please go endorse and vote for it if you can!

07/28/2026 UPDATE:

There are now two versions of this mod. The pre-existing rasterized version meant for the classic rasterized version of DS2LightingEngine. The second version, Second Sin PT, is designed for the pathtracing version of DS2LightingEngine. So be sure to pick the right one!

Can you play this mod online?

Yes! DS2 isn't even aware any of this modification is happening because of how DS2LightingEngine functions. There is an optional download for this mod called "Optional Better Reflections" and it boosts the planar reflections to include the whole scene, but then the game must be offline. So, if you just download the main Visual Mod, you're fine. If you want extra graphical fidelity, download the optional pack if you don't care about online.

Installation instructions (rasterized DS2LE):

1. Install the latest version of DS2LightingEngine SotFS from their discord (Always make sure you have the latest version)

2. Then, copy the "tex_override" and "ds2_atmosphere_presets" folders from my Scholar of the Second Sin mod to your DS2 game folder and overwrite. That's it!

Installation instructions (Pathtracing DS2LE)

1. Install the latest version of the pathtracing DS2LightingEngine, which I recommend using the discord link above and getting it that way.

2. Copy tex_override and ds2_atmosphere_presets over to your DS2 "Game" folder and that's it. For any questions about what GPUs work best with the PT version of DS2LightingEngine or performance questions, I'd refer those to their discord. I'm running on a 4060 Ti 16gb, ryzen 7 5700x, 64gb of ddr4, and I get 60fps at 1440p dlss performance (latest dlss dll, model M)

When updating to a newer version of DS2LightingEngine:

When a new beta version of DS2LightingEngine comes out on their discord, updating is easy.

Just download the latest version from the "beta releases LE" channel. unzip it. and copy the dxgi.dll and shader folder. but SKIP the ds2le_atmospheres folder.

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

Scholar of the Second Sin (Raster-PT versions) is a visual overhaul for Dark Souls II that intelligently upgrades textures and leverages DS2LightingEngine features like volumetric lighting, light shafts, shadowcasting, SSGI, and tessellation. It's for players seeking enhanced graphics without changing gameplay. With 1,715 endorsements and 138,036 downloads, it's a popular choice.

✨ Key Features

Intelligently upgrades textures across the game
Utilizes DS2LightingEngine features including volumetric lighting, light shafts, and shadowcasting
Adds SSGI (screen-space global illumination) for improved lighting realism
Applies tessellation to many meshes for increased geometric detail

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Huge community trust: 1,715 endorsements and 138k downloads show it's widely used
  • Packs a ton of visual upgrades into one mod—lighting, textures, and geometry all get a boost
  • Still actively updated as of July 2026, so it's not abandoned

⚠️ Cons

  • Requires DS2LightingEngine, so you'll need to install that separately and make sure versions match
  • Heavy visual features like SSGI and tessellation can tank performance on mid-range rigs
  • Since it's a graphics overhaul, it might conflict with other texture or lighting mods—check your load order
🎯 Is This For You?
For Dark Souls II players who want a modern visual upgrade without changing gameplay. If you're into photorealistic lighting and detailed textures and have a decent GPU, this is for you. Skip if you prefer the original look or play on low-end hardware.
📦 Install:Medium· 10-15 minutes

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Make sure you have DS2LightingEngine installed and the correct version for your game patch, or the mod won't work.
  • If you're using a mod manager, let it handle the file placement to avoid overwriting issues.
  • Test performance in a busy area like Majula first—if it's too heavy, you can tweak settings in the lighting engine config.
