📋 About This Mod
Ironman Options
Since the original Ironman mod has not been usable for quite some time now, I decided to make a new version.
Unlike the original, this mod only changes the save system and does not include any game mechanics changes outside that.
Also unlike the original, this mod contains mod settings that lets you customize your Ironman experience.
Default Settings:
Unable to save manually.
If you quit the game, it gets saved.
If you die, the save gets deleted.
Optional Start Save:
If you start a new character, it makes a permanent save at game start.
Enabled as default.
Optional Autosave:
Make a save every 5 minutes to protect against game crash etc. (Will be deleted on death)
Disabled as default.
Optional Permanent Saves (not deleted on death)
When entering/exiting houses and/or dungeons.
When waking up after rest, in dungeon and/or above ground, fully healed and there is no enemies nearby.
When clicking a fireplace or campfire, in dungeon and/or above ground, while there are no enemies nearby. (Compatible with Climates & Calories)
Optional Extra Lives
The permanent save gets a number attached that ticks down each time you die. If at zero, it gets deleted the on the next death.
Set how many lives you start with.
Set the max amount of lives you can have.
Set conditions, if any, for gaining extra lives. (At the moment, on level up is the only option)
In practice this means you can customize your experience to be full Ironman while inside a dungeon, but if you die, you can load back to before you entered the dungeon. Or to the last time you set up camp in the dungeon.
Ironman Options is a gameplay mod for Crusader Kings III that enforces permadeath by deleting saves on character death and disabling manual saving, with optional permanent save or extra lives systems. It suits players seeking a hardcore, roguelike experience.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Adds real stakes to your campaign—one mistake and your dynasty is gone
- Extra lives option gives a softer entry into ironman play
- Tiny mod, no bloat, does exactly what it says
⚠️ Cons
- Only 59 endorsements—small community, might not be widely tested
- Last updated in 2021—could be broken with newer game patches
- No documentation or install instructions provided by author
For CK3 veterans who find the base game too forgiving and want a true challenge. Also for streamers or YouTubers looking to create dramatic content. Skip if you prefer relaxed, sandbox-style playthroughs.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Make sure to back up your save folder before enabling this mod, as it deletes saves on death.
- If you're new to ironman, start with the extra lives option to ease into the permadeath experience.
- Check the mod's compatibility with your current game version, as it hasn't been updated since 2021.
