⚠️ Troubleshooting

Game crashes or closes right at launch after I added a mod

A script mod conflict failed to compile. Open Witcher Script Merger, point it at the game directory, and click Merge Scripts; then remove the last mod you added if the error persists.

I see an Error dialog naming a scripts folder before the game closes

That is a script compilation failure, which means two script mods edit the same file. Run Witcher Script Merger to merge them; if the merge fails, keep only the one mod you need.

Loading a save hangs on the loading screen forever

Usually a mod conflict or a missing required mod. Install the mod's listed dependency (many TW3 mods need a base/patch mod) and remove mods that touch the same systems. With very large mod lists the game's hard mod cap can also cause this — a Mod Limit Fix mod on Nexus raises it.

My mod is in the mods folder but the game ignores it

The folder must sit inside the game directory at <game>\mods\ and its name must start with mod. If it ended up in Documents\The Witcher 3\ or you copied the ZIP (not the modXXX folder inside it), the game never reads it.

Every mod broke after the 4.0 next-gen update

The December 2022 next-gen update rewrote the base scripts, so older mods conflict or crash. Install each mod's updated 4.0+ version or its compatibility patch; if the author never updated, only mods that were already 4.0-compatible will work.

Two mods conflict and only one actually works

For script mods, merge them with Witcher Script Merger. For texture and asset mods, only one file can win per file, so keep the higher-quality mod and uninstall the other.

Texture mods conflict: hair, faces, or outfits look wrong or parts are missing

Only one mod can override the same texture or .bundle file. Uninstall all but one mod touching that asset, then reinstall the one you keep so its files extract cleanly.

One mod's effect keeps getting overridden by another mod

The game loads mod folders in alphabetical order and later names win. Rename the mod's folder to sort it last (for example mod001MyMod) or set its load order in Vortex.

A mod works on a new game but my old save crashes on load

The save was created against a different set of scripts. Reinstall the mod versions that match when the save was made, or start a new game — removing script mods mid-playthrough usually breaks existing saves.

Vortex says the mod is deployed but it is not in the game

Confirm Vortex is managing the correct game install path and click Deploy Mods again, then check that the game's mods folder was actually populated. A wrong game path is the usual cause.

A mod that adds items or enemies only shows up partway

Many content mods install into the game's dlc folder, not just mods. Copy the mod's dlc contents into <game>\dlc\ as a dlcmodXXX folder (or run the mod's own installer if it ships one).

Witcher Script Merger errors out or reports a dirty merge

Update Script Merger to the latest version and make sure every folder in mods still contains its script files — a partially extracted or renamed mod folder breaks the merge.

A mod menu or tweak mod appears installed but does nothing in-game

Menu and tweak mods are usually script mods that must be merged and load early. Merge with Witcher Script Merger and check whether the mod has extra install parts like a bin file or a dlc folder that you skipped.

FPS stutters after installing a lot of mods

Every script mod adds to the engine's script load, and huge lists hit the mod cap. Merge scripts with Witcher Script Merger, remove redundant mods, and avoid stacking several mods that change the same system.

The mod says it needs a base or patch framework mod

Install the required framework first — TW3 mods commonly depend on a community patch or base mod that the mod's description names. The mod won't work (and may block loading) until its dependency is installed and merged.

After a small game update some mods vanished from gameplay

The update changed the base scripts that mods hook into. Run Witcher Script Merger again so it re-merges against the new scripts, and check for updated versions of your mods.

Characters or textures render black or with glowing white patches

A broken or conflicting texture mod. Remove duplicate texture overrides and reinstall the affected mod so its .bundle and texture files extract cleanly.
