DUNE part 1of 3, the beaver edition The air is thick with the scent of sun-baked silt and the promise of moisture. For generations, our beavers have followed the dust, our fur matted with grit and our tails dragging in the cracked earth. But this this small, shimmering pond is the first time the horizon hasn’t been a shimmering lie. ​I press my paws into the mud at the water’s edge. My whiskers twitch. The others see a pond; I see the leakage. The grass is too green for such a small pool tells me the real treasure is beneath us. A massive heartbeat of life trapped in the stone. ​But then, the vibration hits my footpads. ​It isn't the rhythmic pulse of flowing water. ...... ...... It’s a rhythmic grinding.
