📋 About This Mod
Update: I now recommend using the Console Command Runner version of this mod, made Bhaeron: Increased Starmap Zoom for More Precise Landings - CCR
If you'd like to use the older methods or just need to see the settings, see below.
Updated: Thanks to Skrypted, the latest version will work for moons as well! The updated commands are below.
Starfield's planet zones are actually consistent from tile to tile, but due to the size of the POI markers it's impossible by default to select a landing zone that is adjacent to one you've already placed. This "mod" is a text file that sets the min zoom (how much you can zoom "in") to a lower value, allowing you to zoom closer to the planet's surface.
Installation:
To install, extract the BetterStarmapZoom.txt to your Starfield game directory. Then add to your StarfieldCustom.ini:
sStartingConsoleCommand=bat BetterStarmapZoom
For those that want to simply add the command to your existing batch commands, this is the command:
setgs "fStarMapInspectCameraDistanceScaleZoomMin:StarMap" 0. 235
setgs "fStarMapInspectCameraDistanceScaleZoomMinMoon:StarMap" 0. 235
setgs "fStarMapInspectCameraDistanceScaleZoomMax:StarMap" 5. 0
The game's default value is 0. 4. I picked 0. 235 because it allows you to zoom closer but not zoom inside the planet mesh, while allowing the POI markers to be small enough to fit within a single resource pixel. I'm unsure if the resource map pixels are the size of a single zone or not, but from existing investigation it seems likely.
I will also be uploading a mod that reduces the scale of the POI markers even further so that you won't have to zoom as much to get precise landing zone placement.
If you intend to explore many adjacent tiles, I suggest also getting More Custom Landing Sites.
Increases the maximum zoom on the star map, enabling more precise landing zone placement. A simple UI tweak for players who want finer control over where they land. With 404 endorsements and 8,437 downloads, it's a popular quality-of-life improvement.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community-approved with 404 endorsements and over 8,000 downloads.
- Does exactly what it says: more zoom for precise landings.
- Lightweight UI mod that won't bloat your load order.
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated in September 2023 — may not be compatible with the latest game patches.
- Only affects zoom; if you're looking for other map improvements, this won't help.
For players who are tired of landing zones being slightly off-target and want finer control. If you're a completionist or explorer who values precise map interactions, this is a must-have. Skip if you want more comprehensive UI overhauls.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since this is a UI mod, make sure to place it in the correct mod folder (e.g., Data or Mods) as per the game's modding conventions.
- If the mod doesn't work after a game update, check for a newer version or use a mod manager to ensure proper load order.
- Test the zoom in different star systems to see the difference in landing precision.
