📋 About This Mod

What:

This mod is similar in concept to BorderSense, but that mod has some issues and hasn't been updated in ages.

Hold Border Notifications will show a text notification and play a unique drum sound when you move from one hold to another.  Notification will show what hold you entered, and your bounty amount for that hold.  If you have a bounty, the drum sound will be a bit more noticeable.

Works with fast travel, even if you travel to the inside of one of the main city areas.

This mod works using vanilla features and scripts, but with no script polling.  Should have no noticeable performance impact.

How:

There is a magic effect that detects when you change cells.  Every cell on the main outdoor map of Skyrim has been reviewed and assigned to a hold.

Data is stored as coordinate ranges within the main script, as well as global values that are loaded on first startup.  First load takes about 25 seconds.

Notes:

  • []The borders can't be pixel perfect as they rely on the cell sizes.

[]Some cells have been assigned as "Border" cells, meaning that the notification won't show until you cross over them (in any direction).  This has been done where it makes sense based on border locations, and also to stop spammy messages if you are travelling right on the border of some holds.

[]In some rare cases, if you are travelling very fast (like on a modded mount), the mod may lose track for a moment.  It will fix itself when you travel to a new area and the previous cells are unloaded (3 cells away along one axis).

[]There are a couple of cells across the river from Solitude that are part of Haafingar rather than Hjaalmarch.  This is because many popular mods expand the Solitude docks to the other side.

    Compatibility:

    Should be compatible with anything.

The Hold Border Banners mod should match up pretty well.  If you are following the roads, you should get the notifications when the banners are in view, or right after you just passed them.

If you have feedback on an area you think is wrong or bugged, please let me know.  If there is a mod that you think should be accommodated with a patch or special version, leave a comment, and I will consider it.

    Q&A:

[]Couldn't this be done with SKSE instead?

Probably!  Let me know when you release your mod that does that, and I will check it out.[]Solstheim?

Solstheim is a mess when it comes to vanilla crime factions, and the mod isn't very useful there.  No current plans to add it.[*]What did you use as the authority of what cell is in what hold?

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Simple and to the point—does exactly what it says with no bloat
  • Decent community traction (106 endorsements, 5,235 downloads)
  • Useful for roleplayers and explorers who like knowing which hold they're in

⚠️ Cons

  • No mention of compatibility with other UI mods—could conflict with notification overhauls
  • Last updated in October 2025, so it might not be actively maintained for future patches
  • Limited feature set—if you want more UI customization, this won't scratch that itch
🎯 Is This For You?
For Skyrim players who want a subtle UI enhancement to track their location and bounty without overhauling the interface. Great for roleplayers who like to know their legal standing in each hold. Skip if you're looking for a comprehensive UI mod—this is purely a notification tweak.

💡 Beginner Tips

  • If you're using a mod manager like Vortex or MO2, just download and install—no extra setup needed.
  • Check if you have other UI mods that alter notifications; they might override this one, so load order matters.
  • Test by fast-traveling between holds to see the notification pop up immediately.
