📋 About This Mod
Description
A solution to the somewhat annoying issue where sheathing while you are casting/readying a spell completely sheathe both hands, instead of simply lowering it like it do for bows.
Main features
-
[]Pressing the "Sheathe" control (default: R) while casting will just cancel the spell, instead of sheathing your hands completely.[/]
[]The behavior is consistent with bows, which allow you to un-knock arrows.[/]
[]Restore expanded magicka when you cancel spells.[/]
[]Support controllers out of the box.[/]
[]Work with spells, staves, scrolls, dual casting, master ritual spells.[/]
[]By extension, will work with anything that fake new archetypes by repurposing the above, such as Dragonborn spiders (scrolls), or some gun mods (staves).[/]

This is an initial release. I don't expect any bugs, but if you ever find any, please report them here :)
Shout outs
Noah for suggesting this might be a simple change to the IDLE record rather than having to dig heavily into behaviors.
Cancel Spells - Proper Spell Sheathing fixes Skyrim's annoying spell-sheathing behavior: pressing the sheathe key while casting now cancels the spell instead of lowering both hands, matching bow mechanics. It restores expanded magicka, supports controllers, and works with spells, staves, scrolls, dual casting, and master rituals. A lightweight quality-of-life tweak for mage players.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Tiny QoL fix that makes spellcasting feel way less clunky—no more accidental full sheathe mid-fight.
- Works with a ton of stuff out of the box: staves, scrolls, dual casting, even mod-added guns.
- Controller support is built in, so you don't need to fiddle with keybinds on gamepad.
⚠️ Cons
- Only 87 endorsements, so it's a niche fix—might not be on everyone's radar.
- Initial release, so there could be hidden bugs despite the author's confidence.
- If you use mods that heavily alter the IDLE records or animation behavior, this could conflict—worth testing.
For Skyrim mages who hate the clunky sheathe animation when canceling a spell—this makes it feel as smooth as un-knocking a bow. Also great for controller players who want a consistent input. Skip if you never cast spells or if you're happy with the vanilla behavior.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Install with a mod manager like Vortex or MO2 to keep your load order clean—it's a simple ESP/ESL, so no manual placement needed.
- Test with a dual-cast spell and a staff to see the cancel behavior in action—it's most noticeable there.
- If you use mods that change animation or IDLE records (like combat overhauls), load this mod after them to ensure it takes priority.
