Introduction:

Inspired by Mod Organizer 2, LMO was built specifically for Linux from the ground up, instead of being adapted, ported or re-implemented from Windows' MO2. It provides a virtual modding environment using OverlayFS, allowing you to install, enable, disable, reorder, and remove mods without touching the game's original files. LMO is designed specifically for Linux.

Windows users should remain with, and use Mod Organizer 2.

Rather than copying files into a game directory, LMO constructs a temporary merged view of the game and your enabled mods, then launches through Proton or Wine. Your game installation stays clean, mod conflicts remain visible and manageable, and reverting changes is as simple as changing your load order. While there is no plan to recreate a 1:1 copy of "MO2 but in Linux", the plan for LMO is to follow MO2's proven UI/UX design and workflow when and where appropriate. What do we mean by 'when and where appropriate'?

To give an example, LMO does not support python plugins as MO2 does. Now you're thinking..."but what about stuff like Root Builder?!" well, the core functionality you need and expect from Root Builder is already present in LMO as Root Files. If you think there's an MO2 plugin whose design and function should be in LMO submit a feature request here.

LMO complements specialist modding tools rather than replacing them. xEdit, DynDOLOD, Wrye Bash, BodySlide, and similar tools continue to run through Wine or Proton, with LMO providing the virtual modded environment around them.

LMO is developed openly on Codeberg under GPL-3. 0-or-later and has been tested on traditional desktop Linux systems, Bazzite, and Steam Deck.
