Best Performance Optimization for Silent Hill 2 Remake

The easiest, most reliable, and transparent way to optimize Unreal Engine 5 games is by configuring the GameUserSettings.ini file.

I create a custom configuration like this for every demanding game I install on my PC.

This modification works by replacing or editing the GameUserSettings.ini document.

What is GameUserSettings.ini?

This is the primary document where all your game settings are stored. When you change something in the options menu, those changes are written here. However, the in-game menu only provides access to a small fraction of the parameters—many critical settings are hidden by developers or locked. Editing this file directly allows you to tune the game much more deeply and accurately, unlocking access to all Unreal Engine 5 options that are unavailable through the standard interface.

Not happy with something? You can find the file at the path provided above, uncheck Read-only in the properties, open the document, edit a couple of numbers to your liking, re-enable Read-only, and keep playing. You tune the game for your specific needs.

Effectiveness:

This file contains the main settings that impact FPS, such as render quality and global scalability presets (sg.*). Configuring this file provides the most significant, stable, and safe performance boost possible.

Who is this mod for:

Owners of weak and mid-range PCs:

If you experience constant FPS drops, stutters, or the game runs too slowly, this method will provide a significant performance boost and smoother gameplay.

Owners of powerful and high-end PCs:

You do not need this mod. Your hardware already handles the game perfectly. You might download it only for educational purposes to see how hidden engine settings work and how they can be changed directly. Please note that removing FPS limits on powerful systems may lead to excessive GPU heating.

Why this method is better than others:

1. Why not Engine.ini?

Editing the Engine.ini document for basic optimization is practically useless, as this document has almost no impact on core performance. Engine.ini contains low-level system engine commands (such as cache behavior or specific fog rendering methods). While you can use it for fine-tuning or disabling individual effects, it lacks the main FPS toggles like internal resolution scaling. Changing Engine.ini often requires deep technical knowledge and can cause graphical artifacts or crashes without providing a substantial performance gain if GameUserSettings is not configured correctly.

2. Why not ready-made mods in the ~mods folder?

Installing an optimization mod in the ~mods folder (usually .pak files) is essentially the same as my method, but unlike mine, it cannot be edited. It is a black box. If the mod author made the image too blurry for your system or didn't lower the settings enough for your video card, you cannot open the file and change the values. You become a prisoner of someone else's settings. My method leaves the choice to you.

Two paths to optimization (your choice):

Simple Path:

Simply download the archive and replace your original GameUserSettings.ini with my file. That is it! I have already pre-set the Read-only attribute on the file, so you do not need to configure anything. Just launch the game and enjoy smooth gameplay—the game will automatically detect your monitor, and my settings will not be reset. This is the fastest and most reliable method.

Advanced Path (Recommended):

Open your original file and configure it yourself using the incredibly simple instructions included in the archive. Once edited, set the Read-only attribute—and you will have the best individual optimization possible.
