VHSifier

A simple desktop application to add VHS effects to videos 'blazingly fast' and crop, resize, and convert them to mp4. Built as an alternative to Retro Rewind VHS Converter (RRVC).

INSTALLATION

Simply download the zip file for your operating system, extract it, and run the executable.

FEATURES

• []General Converter: If you don't want VHS effects, VHSifier can still crop, resize, and convert your videos to mp4/aac, acting as a potential simpler replacement for apps like HandBrake.

  []VHS Effects: If you do want VHS effects, VHSifier gives you a bunch of them to apply to your videos.

  []Video Format Compatibility: Uses ffmpeg to support a variety of video formats by directly using the ffmpeg API (no CLI shenanigans).

  []Encoding Speed Presets: Control your video encoding speed to balance speed with file size (faster speed = larger file size).

  []Parallelism: Leverages all your CPU cores to accelerate video processing. For a 720p video with a target size of 512x512 and 'Ultra Fast' encoding preset on an i9-14900K, this yields processing speeds of upto 900 fps with minimal effects, and upto 500 fps with all effects enabled. (Note: This is a purely anecdotal benchmark based on what I get on my PC for a test video file and shouldn't be taken too seriously. Your mileage will very likely vary based on your CPU, video file, and other factors).

  []Platform Compatibility: Supports Windows & Linux (MacOS compatibility pending).

• Self-contained Executable: Simply download and run.
  MOTIVATION

  While well-made and competent, RRVC was quite slow to process videos for me. This is understandable and unsurprising since it uses Python which famously lacks support for true multithreading, thus isolating processing of the whole video to a single core even if your CPU has multiple cores available. In addition, RRVC is packaged using PyInstaller which has a tendency to trigger AntiVirus software even if it's not malicious. So I thought to make my own app to address these limitations.

  BUGS

  The app by default creates a "VHSifier.log" file in the same location as the executable. In case of bugs, please provide the last few lines from the log file alongside your report.
