  What is UE4SS?

  UE4SS is a modding framework for Unreal Engine games. It runs silently in the background and allows Lua-based mods — like the ones on this page — to work inside Retro Rewind. You only need to install it once.

  UE4SS is developed and maintained by the RE-UE4SS team. This page is a reupload for convenience — all credit goes to them.

  Which version do I need?

  Two versions are available on the Files tab:

  UE4SS_v3. 0. 1 (main file) — Everyone, this is what you need

  zDEV-UE4SS_v3. 0. 1 (optional) — Mod developers only

  Always download the main file unless you are actively developing mods. The zDEV version has additional overhead and debug features that are not intended for regular use. If you experience stuttering or performance issues, check that you are not running the zDEV version.

  Installation

  Windows

  • []Open Steam, right-click Retro Rewind → Manage → Browse local files[/]

    []Navigate to RetroRewind\Binaries\Win64\[/]

    []Extract the UE4SS zip and copy all contents into that folder[/]

    After copying, the folder should look like this:

    RetroRewind-Win64-Shipping.exe   <- the game executable

    dwmapi.dll                       <- must be here, next to the .exe

    UE4SS-settings.ini

    Linux / Steam Deck

    Follow the same steps as Windows, then add the following to your Steam launch options:

    Steam → Right-click Retro Rewind → Properties → General → Launch Options:

    WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dwmapi=n,b" %command%

    Without this line, UE4SS will not load and mods will have no effect.

    Enabling the console

    By default, UE4SS runs silently with no visible window. To use mod keybinds and see mod output, you need to enable the console.

    • []Navigate to RetroRewind\Binaries\Win64\ue4ss\[/]

      []Open UE4SS-settings.ini in a text editor[/]

      []Find the section and change:[/]

    ConsoleEnabled = 1

    That is all you need to use mod keybinds and basic functionality.

    Optional: visible console window

    If you want to see live mod output and error messages, you can also enable:

    GuiConsoleEnabled = 1

    GuiConsoleVisible = 1

    ⚠ Before enabling these, be aware:

    • []The visible console window can cause frame stuttering on some hardware[/]

      []F12 screenshots will capture the console instead of the game — use Ctrl+O to toggle the console window, or set GuiConsoleVisible = 0 after troubleshooting[/]

    Troubleshooting

    The game crashes on startup

    → Make sure you copied the files into Win64\, not the game's root folder. Double-check that dwmapi.dll is in the same folder as RetroRewind-Win64-Shipping.exe.

    No console window appears

    → UE4SS may be running silently. Check Win64\ue4ss\ for a log file to confirm it loaded. If there is no log file, the files are likely in the wrong folder.

    The game won't start at all

    → Make sure you are using the main file (UE4SS_v3. 0. 1), not the zDEV version.

    F12 takes a screenshot of the console instead of the game

    → Set GuiConsoleVisible = 0 in UE4SS-settings.ini. Use Ctrl+O to open the console when you need it.
