📋 About This Mod

Want to kill more than one "innocent" (looking at you Mr. Grey Prince and/or Umbra) without inviting good old Lucien to your front door?

Then this is the mod for you!

Now you can kill 3, 5, 7, or 10 innocent NPCs before you get the message.

Also for added lore-friendliness the message box dialogue has been slightly altered so that the murder references are plural (i.e. "You have murdered many innocents in cold blood...." instead of "You have murdered an innocent [...]" AND "Your killings have been observed by forces unknown..." instead of "Your killing has [...]").

Who is deemed as "innocent"?

  • []People that are not combatants as far as the game engine is concerned. Some people may be unfairly marked.

    What this does not change:

    • []This does not modify ANY dialogue with Lucien upon your first meeting.

      Known issues:

      • []You will see "" at the beginning of the 2 messages I altered, after you've killed the required amount of people:

"You have murdered many innocents in cold blood..."

"Your killings have been observed by forces unknown...."

This is a problem with how the messages are generated in the base game. The script is basically putting out a pre-filled message from another script in the Unreal Engine. This is not something I can easily fix as I can not get to the script's message in the location the Unreal Engine is calling it from.

Solution (requires OBSE64 (Steam) or Ultimate ASI Loader (Gamepass)):

You will have to follow the instructions on this mod (NL-Tag Remover).

      Alternate Solution:

If you do not mind the message appearing singular (not plural as written above) then I've provided alternate files that will NOT show the "" tag but the messages will make it seem like you've only killed 1 person. This is for those who do not want to use OBSE but also do not want to see "" tags.

Will this mod work if I already started the Dark Brotherhood questline or already killed someone?

      • []No, the script that's responsible for starting that questline is the same one that's modified in this mod. If you have seen the message "Your killing has been observed by forces unknown" then you have already begun the quest (even if you haven't slept in a bed and met Lucien) and thus you can not do anything about it unless you want to try resetting the quest and modify your murderer status with console commands. People have tried to use the console before in old-oblivion and as far as I know I don't think anyone was able to make it work without damaging their game.

Delay Dark Brotherhood Initiation is a small quest mod for Skyrim that postpones the start of the Dark Brotherhood questline, requiring 3, 5, 7, or 10 murders instead of the default. It offers configurable options to suit different playstyles, making it ideal for players who want a more gradual or challenging progression into the faction.

✨ Key Features

Delays the Dark Brotherhood questline initiation until you commit a set number of murders.
Offers four configurable options: 3, 5, 7, or 10 murders required.
Simple quest tweak with a modest but active user base (67 endorsements, 6,260 downloads).

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Tight, focused tweak that does exactly what it says—no bloat, just a cleaner pacing for the Dark Brotherhood.
  • Community-tested with 67 endorsements and over 6k downloads, so it's proven to work for a decent chunk of players.
  • Four different thresholds give you real choice, whether you want a slight delay or a full murder spree before the quest kicks in.

⚠️ Cons

  • Only affects the initiation trigger—if you're looking for deeper quest changes, this won't scratch that itch.
  • Small mod with a niche appeal; might not be worth it if you're not specifically bothered by the default pacing.
  • Potential compatibility risk with other mods that alter the Dark Brotherhood questline or murder mechanics—check your load order.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Skyrim players who feel the Dark Brotherhood questline starts too early and want a more natural progression by forcing more murders before the letter arrives. Also great for roleplayers who want to build a reputation as a killer before joining. Skip if you're fine with the vanilla pacing or want more extensive quest overhauls.

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Since this is a simple quest tweak, place it near the end of your load order to avoid conflicts with other quest mods.
  • If you use a mod manager, let it handle the file placement—just download and activate, no manual steps needed.
  • Test the mod on a fresh save or after a clean save to ensure the delay triggers correctly, especially if you have other Dark Brotherhood mods.
