Adding your own Traits
New traits are created in player scripts using I. CharacterTraitsFramework.addTrait() in a player script. New trait types are registered automatically based on their type field. Traits with duplicate id get overriden based on load order: trait loaded first gets overriden by trait loaded last.
Example
local I = require("openmw.interfaces")
local self = require("openmw.self")
local ui = require("openmw.ui")
I. CharacterTraits.addTrait {
id = "test",
type = "background",
name = "Test Background",
description = "This background does this, this, and that.",
doOnce = function()
-- Called only once when the trait is activated
local strength = self.type.stats.attributes.strength(self)
strength.base = strength.base + 15
onLoad = function(data)
-- Called when the trait is activated and during script initialization
ui.showMessage("Test background successfully initialized!")

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Solid community trust with 92 endorsements and over 5,000 downloads.
- Opens up character creation modding for OpenMW, a niche but dedicated scene.
- Actively maintained—last updated June 2026, so it's current.
⚠️ Cons
- It's a framework, not a content mod—you'll need modding skills to use it.
- No detailed documentation or examples provided in the description.
- Requires OpenMW, so it won't work for vanilla Morrowind players.
For OpenMW modders who want to add custom character traits like backgrounds or lineages to their mods. If you're a player looking for new traits out of the box, this isn't for you—it's a toolkit, not a content pack.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Make sure you're running OpenMW, not the original Morrowind engine, as this framework is built specifically for OpenMW.
- Check the mod's forum or comments section for community-made examples of traits to see how the framework works in practice.
- If you're new to modding, start by studying existing trait mods that use this framework to understand the JSON structure.
