Hoche

[ A 1:1 recreation of the French ironclad-battleship Hoche] Completed in 1890 this...unique...vessel began to show some rather unfortunate design flaws, rather quickly. One of the most obvoious being its rather large and heavily unarmoured superstructure--which for a ship that had very little waterline clearance to begin with--made for very uneasy sailing due to her being top heavy. Thus, the contemporaries of the era fittingly dubbed this great vessel 'le Grand Hotel'. This was one of the more mild names, I might add--my personal favorite being the 'la belle cible' or 'the pretty target', given to her by the German Kaiser, of all people. One of her most glaring issues other than the obvious superstructure problems was her clearane above the waterline, where even mild seas would basically turn her into a submarine--and of course, a French admiral also gave her the title 'cuirassee sous-marine', which quite literally means submarine battleship. In terms of her service record; from what little I could find, it seems she had an uneventful career--save for the unfortunate collision with a passenger steamer in 1892 killing one-hundred and seven civlians; Victorian navigation at it's best. For the greater part of the 1890s and early 1900s she underwent many refits to fix her initial design errors, and eventually was decommissioned and placed in reserve in 1908--without ever having fired her guns anger, from what I could tell.
