USS Erie PG-50

A 1:1 replica of the American patrol gunboat USS Erie, as seen in World of Warships. Commissioned in 1936 following an uphill battle in the accquisition of funds, following the Great Depression. Erie was made to function mainly as a diplomatic envoy ship. Historically, she had large guest quarters and admirals' quarters and even a movie projector area on the supertructure--though of course mine doesn't. Erie's sea-going career began in late 1936 where she was assigned to squadron 40-T off the Spanish and French coasts, performing diplomatic missions and protecting American personnel and interests during the Spanish Civil War. It was during this patrol cruise that Erie first experienced hostile gunfire, when the Spanish battleship Espana--which I will eventually build, by the way--failed to notice the small Erie and opened fire on the port city where Erie was stationed. Espana then quickly noticed the neutral American ship and sailed away; with no damage to either party. Erie would spend the remainder of the 1930s doing goodwill missions, disaster relief missions, and hosting an assortment of diplomats; generally around South and Central America. At the outbreak of WWII for America in December of 1941, Erie was stationed at the Pacific end of the Panama canal. She spent most of the War escorting Japanese detainees from Central and South American ports , as well as guarding Allied convoys against German U-boats in the Caribbean. It was one of these u-boats that eventually crippled Erie, after she was hit twice and forced to beach herself.
