📋 About This Mod
Tweaks on HP, Armor, and character stats to counter the overpower-ness granted by TZA version. Brings down the game to similar levels of difficulty the original game had.
This mod makes a few carefully thought modifications on HP, Armor, and offensive attributes to bring back the difficulty similar to the original game experience on PS2.
The entire game is balanced around some initial values and the main story progression was left mostly unchanged with International and The Zodiac Age, while boosting characters with the job system since IZJS, with dual jobs in TZA these boost are over the top making the experience quite bland difficulty-wise (IMO).
The exact changes are:
-
[]Less Strength and Magic growth, and initial values usually from -2 to -8 if character has high growth and -2 to -6 if character has low growth. These values apply from level 1 to level 99 compared to vanilla TZA. This partially counters the up to 11 extra Str/Mag you get through the job boards compared with the original game.[/]
-
[]HP boosts from the board cut in half, with the same LP cost (Example, the +200 HP node now is a +100 HP instead). HP natural growth is boosted equally on all party members up to about 600HP increase compared to vanilla TZA at level 99 (the extra hp is progressive). This is mostly to avoid getting into several thousand HP quite early into the game, also to tone down HP values a bit.[/]
- []Defense and Magic defense values from head and body gear more inline with the original values, but still a bit beefed up (you are locked into one-then up to two armor types though the game). As the most extreme example is the ultimate mystic body armor, Lordly robes, has 61 Defense on TZA, but had 40 Def on vanilla, with this mod, lands on 45 Def.[/]
-
[]Light amor consistently provides speed (from 1 on first armors up to 10 on endgame armors, with some exception). Some minor tweaks (buffs) to some light armor secondary stats when is reasonable, to line them up to similar attribute values on other armor types.[/]
2. 1 Changes
- []Minor consistency changes on some equipment: Save the Queen a bit more ATK, Cameo belt gives ATK instead of MAG, some late game equipment give a bit more of extra stats (IE Circlet from 2 to 3 STR).[/]
- []Heavy armor chest from Mt Bur-Omisace to Archades nerfed slightly in DEF (4 DEF points at most), the values even if they were close to vanilla, were absorbing like 90% of phys damage from the enemies in that progression section.[/]
1. Download and drop it on Vortex. FF12 External File Loader is mandatory.
2. Alternatively, and still with the loader installed, just paste the ff12data inside the zip (with all its contents) into \mods\deploy
Note:
To get the str and mag stat changes you have to start a new game, the HP changes, and the armor are readily available as you load any game with the mod active: you need to re-equip something the see the HP adjustments.
Alternatively, you could refresh characters str and mag values in an ongoing save, using CheatEngine and The Insurgent's Toolkit. Under Party Member Editor > Reset level and stats (and choose your actual level).
Quick QA (or me, overexplaining the whole thing)
– Is this a hard‑mode mod?
Not really. The game remains fairly easy if you plan a little and do side content, and overall it should feel close to the vanilla experience. It is harder than unmodded TZA, but not in a punishing or frustrating way. The goal is simply to raise the challenge enough that choices and actions feel meaningful again, aiming to recapture the engagement I had when playing vanilla for the first time.
– What are the key differences that make TZA easier compared to Vanilla or IZJS?
In vanilla, you had full flexibility but characters were much weaker overall. IZJS removed that flexibility, but in exchange jobs became significantly stronger while enemies stayed almost the same. TZA brings back much of that flexibility, and dual jobs make characters even stronger, which makes it noticeably easier than the older versions.I’ve played all three versions, and vanilla’s difficulty stood out to me because of the tension and challenge present throughout the game. This mod aims to restore that feeling with minimal changes, without undoing the QoL and other improvements introduced in the newer releases.
– Why the HP changes?
In vanilla, every character could get up to +1000 HP from licenses, and that was it. In IZJS, HP bonuses varied by job and ranged from about +1000 to +3000, which is huge when you consider tha
