Pixies and Fairies - now with less world database corruption
TWENTY FOUR YEARS AGO
THE CONSOLE IS RULER OF GAMESTOP SHELVES
ONLY THE GLORIOUS PC MASTER RACE STANDS AGAINST IT
GAMEFAQS ARE NOW BATTLEFIELDS
Actually, the year was 2002 and Gas Powered Games released Dungeon Siege and I was just finishing high school. For reference, I am still playing Dungeon Siege and I'm over 40 when I'm typing this right now in late 2026.
The entire time this game has existed, there has been a really nasty bug that never got fixed: if you triggered the "gift of life" or "gift of mana" from the glowing pixies and fairies, there's a good chance it would glitch out the world database state of your game session and the world chunks would stop loading properly until you're stuck on an island in a demented digital void. Not a huge issue in a singleplayer game where you can just reload, but if you're down to grind for a 4 hour multiplayer mayhem spree, that's a freaking showstopper. It was there even after every official patch or re-release, and it's still - to this day (THIS VERY DAY, MINDY FROM THE NETWORK) - terrorizing players in the Steam and GOG re-releases of stock Dungeon Siege and LoA.
It was never fixed.
But the year is now 2026. The game engine's code is out in the wild (it's a long story). I have turned some of the (yech) new "AI" tools (they're not actually AI, people, they're Markov Chain generators with extremely large databases) loose on the problem to find it.
And they did.
In the Fairy and Pixie healing spell templates...
[]Four long-lived “curve” effects are created with:
-
[]must_update()[/]
[
]ts(3. 125) (texture scale / lifetime parameter that makes them persist)[/][
]sfx freeze_targets[/][
]Attachment to @kill_bone on the target (the player character)[/]
[]The fairy itself has only 1 HP and the spell carries a spell_penalty of decrease_health = 3. 0. The fairy therefore dies (or is forced into its death path) almost immediately after casting.[/]
[]When the fairy dies, its GO is destroyed and the continuous-world system begins unloading the SiegeNode / logical leaves that contained it. Meanwhile the four curve effects (and the freeze_targets state) are still alive and still hold references / attachments that point back into the now-dying or already-unloaded node/leaf space.[/]
[]The combination of:
-
[]frozen targets,[/]
[
]effects that outlive their owning GO,[/][
]attachments to a bone on a GO that is about to be (or has just been) streamed out,[/][
]and the aggressive reference-counting in NodeDatabase / LoadMgr[/]
Here's what was changed to fix this:
[]Removed every must_update() and sfx freeze_targets.[/]
[]Shortened lifetimes (ts and explicit dur).[/]
[]All attachments now go to the source (the fairy) instead of the player’s kill bone.[/]
[]Total visual duration is still noticeable and “gift-like”, but everything dies cleanly before the fairy’s GO/node is unloaded.[/]
[]The final WE_SPELL_SYNC_END is kept so the rest of the spell system stays happy.
Drop the .dsres into your Dungeon Siege\Resources folder and enjoy. This should fix the bug.
Should.
The fairies will still give you health or mana, vanish, and YOUR GAME'S WORLD DATABASE STATE SHOULD NOT GO SLOWLY INSANE.
Unlike the other fix that's been around for years, this one doesn't just brute-force the problem by disabling the healing effects. If I got this right it genuinely fixes the problem without removing the intended purpose to the fairies and pixies. We can argue whether they should scale with your max HP and mana so they're not pointless beyond level 1, but right now this is a fix for how they were supposed to ship.
If it's still broken just throw something at me.
Yes, I used an LLM to code this. I'm an artist, not a programmer. Apparently I'm the first person since the actual dev team to want to bother to fix this in a quarter of a century, so if somebody wants to do this with a proper human touch, please by all means take this and run with it.
PS: I snipped the picture of the Fairy from the screenshot on the Dungeon Siege fandom.wiki, so credit to whoever took that screenshot originally. It wasn't me.
Also: I've cooked up
