Get Your Bearings

Made for people who like playing without a HUD, this adds an actual Compass item that lets you orient yourself without the HUD or without pausing the game by pulling out your map. Credit goes to micah_raygun_ for pitching the original idea and use-case.

ACQUIRING THE COMPASS

There's two main ways for acquiring the Compass:

• []They can show up as random merchandise in General Stores and Pawn Shops[/]

  []Use the console command givecompass to add one straight to your inventory[/]

With a Compass in your inventory, you can USE the item and you will begin viewing the compass. Viewing the compass will sheathe your weapon if it is drawn. USE-ing the compass again, unsheathing your weapon or readying/casting a spell while viewing the compass will put away the compass.

You can use any Hotbar mod to quickly USE the Compass item (tested with Retro-Frame's item shortcut feature) and pull it out/put it away.

Alternatively, this mod comes with an optional hotkey (default: X) that allows you to quickly view/put away the Compass if you have it in your inventory. Set the input using Unity's KeyCode documentation.

While in use, the compass needle will be oriented to always point North. That's pretty much it.

MOD COMPATIBILITY

Not quite sure how well/bad this works with other mods. It didn't seem to have any ill effects when tested on my main install.

Some mods that were in mind when I made this:

• []WEAPON WIDGET - If Weapon Widget is enabled, this mod will detect it and apply WW's Bob and Inertia effect to the Compass sprite.[/]

  []HANDHELD TORCHES & SHIELD WIDGET - The HT ambidexterity module might cause you to have two primary hands if you use a torch/lantern with a shield or a bow. You can turn off the module and set shields to be off-screen when sheathed to avoid this.[/]

  []FIRST-PERSON LIGHTING - The Compass sprite will work with FPL's tint changing with the ambient light + any spell effects.[/]

  FUTURE PLANS

  Not really sure what else to do with this. Maybe add more gadgets that further allow you to gain world information without using the HUD, like maybe a chronometer. Or multifunctional pointer modes, like making the Compass point to a custom destination or quest target. And maybe opportunities that cause condition damage to the Compass. We'll see.
