Weather Synchronizer

- INTRODUCTION -

Weather Synchronizer (or Wsync for short) is a mod I originally created back in 2018.

Back then, I used LuaSocket to fetch real-time weather data from OpenWeatherMap's API, converted the JSON response into a Lua table, wrote it to a file, and used a batch script to compile that file every second. Then, my STimeCycle script would read the data and change the in-game weather to Clear Sky, Cloudy, Rainy, or Thunderstorm. It was a pretty roundabout setup and hard to install, but "It just works" - Todd Howard.

Now we have more advanced modding tools and knowledge. You only need DSL 10, enabled system access, and an Open Weather Map account to synchronize. There are 54 specific weather conditions to see instead of 4 generic weathers like before. For all of that, thanks to Grant and derpy54320 that we have much more control over the game's time cycle.

The weather is only requested when entering an outdoor area, such as the Main Map or Junkyard. This mechanism helps you to prevent reaching the maximum number of API calls. Although it's not likely to happen, as OWM's free plan is more than sufficient for personal use (1 million API calls / month), but who knows if they will change it in the future or if you happen to use the same API key for something else.

Step-by-step install guide for anyone new to Bully modding.

If turns out that you're a veteran, skip the basics and head straight to Step 4.

STEP 1: INSTALL THE FULL VERSION OF DSL 10

• []Download the full version of DSL 10 (the one under the "Optional Files" section).

  []Install it by following the provided instructions.

  []Done.

  STEP 2: ENABLE DSL SYSTEM ACCESS

  • []If the file "../_derpy_script_loader/dslconfig.ini" doesn't exist, launch the game once and then close it.

    []Open "../_derpy_script_loader/dslconfig.ini" using Notepad or any text editor.

    []Set the following values:

   allow_networking: true → allow_networking: false

  allow_system_access: false → allow_system_access: true

  • []Save the file.

  []Done.

  STEP 3: INSTALL THE MOD

  • []Extract the 7z archive.

    []Copy (or Cut) the "_derpy_script_loader" folder.

    []Paste it into your Bully - Scholarship Edition installation folder.

    []Done.

    STEP 4: CONFIGURE YOUR LOCAL AREA

    • []Open the file: "../_derpy_script_loader/scripts/Wsync/Countries/.txt" with any text editor.

      []Search up your borough, sub-urb, city, or district name.

      []Locate the line: "Your Place":

      []Open: "../_derpy_script_loader/scripts/Wsync/Config.ini"

      []Paste the value into the "city_id" field.

      []Done.

      STEP 5: SET UP YOUR OPEN WEATHER MAP ACCOUNT

      • []Create an account at www.openweathermap.org (or sign in if you already have one).

        []Go to: https://home.openweathermap.org/api_keys.

        []If the status says "Inactive", click the toggle switch under "Actions" to activate it.

        []Copy the API key listed under the "Key" column.

        []Open: "../_derpy_script_loader/scripts/Wsync/Config.ini"

        []Paste the key into the "api_key" field.

        []Done.

        - NOTE -

        • []Any data you provide for using this modification is entirely local. I don't collect it, I don't see it, and I'm not interested either. It's fully open source, feel free to inspect or compile the scripts by yourself.

          []If you just registered, it might take a few minutes before you can use the API_KEY. To prevent "Your API_KEY is either incorrect or still being processed", wait around 5 - 15 minutes and it should be ready to use.
