Why this mod exists

In sieges, horses don't spawn. Your cavalry fights on foot, still carrying lances that are too long for a castle wall or a gatehouse. Pikemen do the same: they poke over the heads of allies on narrow ramparts, catch on ladders and walls, and lose to anyone who closes the distance. These weapons are built for open-field charges and anti-cavalry lines, and a siege has neither.

This mod takes lances and pikes away from troops when they spawn in a siege and gives them a weapon that makes sense in close quarters. The goal is soldiers who fight properly on the walls and in the streets. Field battles are left alone by default, so your cavalry keeps its lances where they matter.

What it does

When a troop spawns in an affected battle, the mod checks its weapons. Any lance or pike is removed, and the troop is left with a proper melee weapon:

  • []If the troop already carries a sword, axe, mace or short spear, the lance or pike is simply dropped.[/]

[]If it has nothing left to fight with, it gets a one-handed weapon, two-handed weapon or short spear from its own other equipment sets, so a troop only uses gear it could already spawn with. Troops carrying a shield prefer one-handed weapons.[/]

[]If none of its sets has a suitable weapon, it gets a tier-appropriate weapon from its culture's banner bearer replacement list, the same list the game uses when a troop becomes a banner bearer.[/]

[]As a last resort, it gets a tier-appropriate one-handed sword of its culture.[/]

Only spawn equipment changes. Your troops' gear in the party screen, their upgrade trees and your save are not modified. Banner bearers are left to the game's own banner system, and your own character's equipment is never changed.

    Customization (MCM)

    Affected battles

    • []Sieges[/]

      []Hideouts[/]

      []Naval battles[/]

      []Field battles[/]

      Affected troops

      • []Whose troops: Player party, Player clan (your clan's parties and garrisons), Player side (you and your allies) or Everyone (both sides, the default).[/]

[]Include heroes (off by default): also applies to companions and lords.[/]

        Removed weapons

        • []Lances and pikes are always removed.[/]

[]Remove long bracing spears (on by default): also removes long anti-cavalry spears (pike adjacent) that can brace, including a few vanilla "lances" that can't be couched.[/]

[]Remove all polearms (off by default): removes every non-throwing polearm, short spears included, so replacements are only swords, axes and maces.[/]

[]Max polearm length (0 = off): also removes any polearm longer than the length you set, in centimetres. Useful for modded spears that have no couch, pike or brace ability but are too big for close battles.[/]

        Custom battles

All options work in custom battles too, including sieges, the lord's hall and War Sails naval custom battles.

        Requirements

        • []Harmony[/]

[]Mod Configuration Menu v5 (with its own requirements, ButterLib and UIExtenderEx)[/]

[]War Sails is optional. The naval options only matter if you own it.[/]

          Load order

Place below Harmony and MCM. Load it after any mods that add items so their weapons are classified correctly.

          Compatibility

          • []Safe to add to or remove from an existing save. The mod stores nothing in your save.[/]

[]Works with modded weapons, troops and cultures, including total conversions.[/]

[]Should work alongside other mods that change troop equipment, since it only adjusts what the game has already rolled for a spawning soldier.[/]
