Know Your Roll

Baldur's Gate 3 tells you what a spell does, but not what it rolls with, and

almost never what it rolls against. Know Your Roll adds a single line to the

top of every spell, cantrip and attack tooltip: the ability your character

rolls with, and the defence the target uses to resist it. Nothing else about

the game changes.

  Compatibility

  Know Your Roll replaces no game file. It touches no interface file, no spell

  data and no saved game. It only adds a line of text while you play, so it

  should not interfere with other mods -- including other tooltip mods, which

  usually work by replacing interface files. You can add it to a running

  playthrough and remove it again at any time.

  How it works in game

  Point at any spell, cantrip or attack -- in the hotbar, in the spellbook, on

  the level-up screen. The first line of the tooltip now reads:

  Roll: CHA vs AC

  The first value is the ability your character rolls with. The second

  is what the target defends with: either its Armour Class, or the ability it

  rolls its saving throw with.

  It follows the character, not the spell

  The same spell can use a different ability depending on who casts it, and the

  line reflects that. A Warlock's Eldritch Blast shows Charisma, a Wizard's

  Fire Bolt shows Intelligence, a Cleric's Sacred Flame shows Wisdom against a

  Dexterity save. Multiclass characters are handled correctly, because the

  value is read from the spell as your character actually knows it -- a spell

  learned from a scroll, a subclass or a feat keeps its own ability.

  Weapon attacks too

  • []Melee weapons use Strength; finesse weapons use whichever of Strength or Dexterity is higher for you.[/]

    []Bows and crossbows use Dexterity.[/]

    []Pact of the Blade is recognised: a bound weapon shows Charisma -- and only that weapon, so throwing something still shows the right ability.[/]

    []Swap your weapon and the line follows within a moment.[/]

    Spells that roll against nothing stay clean

    Healing, buffs, Guidance, summons and utility spells get no extra line. Only

    spells and attacks that actually make a roll are labelled.

    In your language

    The abbreviations are taken from the game itself, so they match the rest of

    your interface no matter which language you play in. The word in front of

    them is translated for English and German; the other languages use a

    straightforward translation that has not been checked by a native speaker.

    Nothing to set up

    No configuration, no menu, no in-game options. Install it and the line is

    Multiplayer

    The mod is built for single player. In multiplayer the values follow the

    character the host is controlling, so other players may see abbreviations

    that belong to someone else's character.

    Installation

      []Put KnowYourRoll.pak into your Mods folder, or install it with your mod manager.[/]

      To uninstall, remove the .pak. The next time you start the game every

      description is back to normal.
