No Tortured Screaming

Background

In some of the darker and more unpleasant locations in Baldur's Gate 3, a lot of screaming can be heard in the background – screaming I can best describe as "tortured". Sure, these sounds might fit the vibe of the locations they play in, but they might also be anxiety-inducing, annoying, or even immersion-breaking (where exactly are the people who make these noises?). I made this mod to mute these screams, without the need to reduce the volume on the Ambient audio channel.

What the mod does

No Tortured Screaming replaces a number of scream-filled sound files with empty files, thus muting the screams. Hear the difference in this video:

How it works

I extracted all (!) the sound effects in the game with BG3 Modder's Multitool, used Windows Process Monitor to identify the screams, and created some blank .wem files with the same file names as the originals. I then placed the files within my mod's Public folder, which means they will override the game's packaged sound files when the mod is installed.
