Banana Villagers

A joke mod born from a chat with @dlund in the ASKA modding Discord 😆 No grand goals here, it's just for fun.

Nothing to switch on: load a world and your villagers are already yellow and in overalls. The color, the steps, the waddle and the shouts each have their own setting on the Mods tab.

Your own lines: the shouts are WAV files in BepInEx/plugins/AskaBanana/voices, and a file's name is what the speech bubble says: Yay, banana!.wav shows "Yay, banana!". More takes of the same line go in as Yay, banana! (2).wav, Yay, banana! (3).wav and so on, the way Windows names a copied file; the bubble still says "Yay, banana!". Add, remove or replace files (any uncompressed WAV: PCM or 32-bit float, mono or stereo, up to 10 seconds, up to 64 files; Windows doesn't allow ? or : in a file name) and the game picks the change up within a second, no restart needed. Keep a copy of your files: updating the mod through a mod manager puts the default ones back.

Installation

Install BepInEx and ASKA Mod Core first (both are listed under Requirements), then install this mod with Vortex, or unpack the archive into the ASKA folder so the files land in BepInEx/plugins/AskaBanana/.

Linux / Steam Deck: add this to ASKA's launch options in Steam (Windows doesn't need it):

Change them in the game: Settings, the Mods tab, then Apply; the tab follows the game's language. They are stored in BepInEx/config/ArcheeNic. AskaMods.ini. You can also edit BepInEx/plugins/AskaBanana/aska_mod.ini, but only while the game is running: with the game closed, the stored value wins.

What it does

banana_color

overalls: yellow skin, blue overalls, black gloves, black boots on most outfits, hair and headgear hidden (some beards and hairstyles stay); all paints the whole villager yellow, skin only the skin, off keeps the game's colors

banana_step_speed

How much faster the legs move while walking; 1 keeps the game's steps. Walking speed itself does not change

banana_waddle

Side-to-side sway of the upper body while walking, degrees; 0 turns it off

banana_shouts

Speech bubble and shout when a villager heads off to carry something; 0 turns it off

banana_volume

Loudness of the shout, from 0 to 1

Good to know

• []Only the look and the sound change. Villagers work, walk and carry exactly as before, and nothing of the mod is written to your save.[/]

  []Turning a color or the steps off brings the villagers back as they were, right away.[/]

  []A villager shouts at most every 25 seconds or so, and only within about 45 m of the camera, so a busy settlement doesn't turn into a choir.[/]

  []The quick steps and the waddle are shown for villagers within about 60 m of the camera. Next to a busy village they cost a few frames per second (about 5% in my test).[/]

  []Tested in single player; co-op hasn't been tested yet.[/]

  []The shouts are AI-generated speech: an open text-to-speech model (Qwen3-TTS, Apache-2. 0) voiced them and the pitch was raised. Your own recordings can replace them.[/]

  AI was used to write the code quickly. I designed the mod, thought through how it should behave and put real care into it, so this is not a mod made by AI alone: the AI was the tool that carried out the work and took the routine off my hands.
