Every line anybody speaks gets a second language on the line

underneath. Made for people learning a language while they play.

Spoken lines only - menus and mission text stay in one language,

on purpose. The reason is at the bottom of this file.

You choose both:

top line    the language the game is set to

second line  the language you are learning

14 languages, and 132 of the 182 combinations work. The ones that

do not are marked in the menu, and why is at the bottom of this

The voice track is English whatever you set - the game ships only

English audio - so what you are choosing is what it writes on

---------------- BEFORE YOU START ------------------------------

You need Python. It is free, from python.org, and you install it

WINDOWS  https://www.python.org/downloads/ -> the big yellow

"Download Python" button. In its installer, TICK THE

BOX "Add python.exe to PATH" before clicking Install.

LINUX    you almost certainly have it. If not:

Ubuntu / Debian / Mint  sudo apt install python3

Fedora / Nobara          sudo dnf install python3

Arch / CachyOS          sudo pacman -S python

Steam Deck already has it - use Desktop Mode.

This mod is one Python file. It downloads nothing and installs

nothing on your PC. Everything it does is to the game's own files,

and it can put those back exactly as they were.

You need about 100 MB free on the drive the game is on.

---------------- INSTALL ---------------------------------------

1. Close the game and its launcher.

2. Unzip this download somewhere you can find again. Keep the

files together.

3. Open a command window IN that folder:

WINDOWS  click the white address bar at the top of the folder

window, type  cmd  and press Enter.

LINUX    right-click inside the folder -> "Open Terminal

4. Type this and press Enter:

WINDOWS  python dualsub_installer.py

LINUX    python3 dualsub_installer.py

5. The first time only, it asks where the game is. Paste the

folder that holds Retail\007FirstLight.exe - or drag that

folder onto the window. It remembers the answer.

6. Answer three questions: which language you play in, which one

you are learning, and where it should appear. Press Enter to

take the defaults.

7. Wait about a minute. It reads twenty-seven thousand spoken

lines in two languages, and it has not stopped.

8. Start the game. In Options -> Language, set the text language

to the one you picked as the top line.

IF WINDOWS SAYS IT CANNOT WRITE TO THE GAME FILES, the game is in

Program Files and needs administrator rights:

Click Start, type  cmd

Right-click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as administrator"

Type  cd /d  then a space, then drag the unzipped folder onto

the window, then press Enter

Then:  python dualsub_installer.py

Games on another drive usually do not need this at all.

---------------- REMOVE ----------------------------------------

Run the installer again the same way and press  R .

The game's own two archives are put back byte for byte and the

mod's record of what it did is deleted. If something else has

changed one of them since the install, it leaves that file exactly

as it is and tells you so.

IF THE RECORD IS GONE - you copied the game folder, a run was

interrupted, something deleted it - the first screen offers  C

instead of R. That reads every line in the archive and writes back

any that still carry a second language, without it. It puts the

words back, not the bytes, so the archive stays the size it is.

---------------- IF YOU VERIFY THE GAME FILES ------------------

This mod writes the doubled lines into the game's own archives.

Nothing that was already in them is moved: each changed line is

added at the end of the file, and twelve bytes are pointed at it.

Steam and the Epic launcher do not know that. If you use "Verify

integrity of game files" while this is installed, they will decide
