Wolfenstein The New Order - Fast Loading

Loading a save in The New Order takes 10 to 18 seconds, depending on the level, even from a fast SSD. The drive isn't the reason: the game waits for every file it streams in by sleeping 1-2 ms at a time, thousands of times per load. This plugin removes those waits, a fixed pause after every map load, the "press X to continue" prompt and the logo video at start-up.

Built with Claude; tested on all four versions.

  What it does

  • []Fast reads: the game checks right away whether a read has finished, instead of sleeping between checks. On a slow hard drive it goes back to sleeping after 2 ms of each read (SmartWait, on by default), so the drive doesn't keep a CPU core busy.[/]

    []No 100 ms pause after each map load.[/]

    []No "press E/X to continue" after a load. Story cutscenes that play while a chapter loads are left alone: they play, and can be skipped, as usual.[/]

    []No logo video at start-up, the same as the launch option +com_skipIntroVideo 1.[/]

  Each part can be switched off in TNOFastLoading.ini.

  Requirements

  The GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store or Xbox app (PC Game Pass) version, on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11; each was checked in the game. On any other build the plugin changes nothing. If that's yours, post the line with "PE timestamp" from TNOFastLoading.log in the comments.

  Installation

  Extract the archive into the folder with WolfNewOrder_x64.exe. In Steam: right-click the game, Manage, Browse local files. With the Xbox app (Game Pass) it's the Content folder of the installation, for example C:\XboxGames\Wolfenstein- The New Order (PC)\Content (in the app: Manage, Files, Browse).

  The archive includes Ultimate ASI Loader as winmm.dll, which loads the plugin. If another mod already brings Ultimate ASI Loader, under any name, you can keep yours and add only the TNOFastLoading files.

  To uninstall, delete the files whose names start with TNOFastLoading, and winmm.dll if no other mod uses it.

  Compatibility

    []Can be installed next to mods that bring their own dinput8.dll, such as id5 Tweaker (tested on the GOG and Epic versions): this mod's loader is winmm.dll.[/]

    []Changes no game files, saves or achievements: it patches a few bytes of the running game in memory and writes only its log.[/]

    Troubleshooting

    TNOFastLoading.log, next to the game, shows what the plugin did. A working start lists "FastReads: patched", "FastPreloadWait: patched", "AutoContinue: hooked" and "SkipIntroVideo: patched". No log at all means either the loader didn't run (check that winmm.dll is next to WolfNewOrder_x64.exe and that your antivirus didn't remove it), or Windows didn't let the plugin write in the game folder (for example under Program Files), in which case the fixes still work.
