Two game builds are supported

There are currently two versions of Effort Matters, because different Wartales installations can use different versions of

hlboot.datv1. 1 - Current Build

Use this version for the current Steam build.

Supported clean

hlboot.datSHA-256:

4730a34ea49e2ac94cf4b39a6996d171f89f930c5433a219f2e27c1557b55584v1. 0 - Legacy / Alternate Build

Keep using this version if your installation uses the older

hlboot.dat. This may include some non-Steam or older installations.

JACKOB's launcher verifies the file before making any changes, so an incompatible version will simply be rejected rather than patching the wrong file.

What does Effort Matters do?

Vanilla Wartales combat XP is based largely on an average enemy reward combined with the overall power difference between the two armies.

That power adjustment is capped, which means the number of enemies you actually defeated does not translate directly into the amount of experience you receive.

Effort Matters replaces that foundation.

Every enemy contributes to the XP pool. That pool is then divided among the fighters you brought into battle, and fighting enemies above your party's average level increases the reward further.

The result is an XP system that cares much more about what you actually accomplished.

  • []More enemies = a larger XP pool[/]

[]More fighters on your side = less XP per character[/]

    []Higher-level enemies = more XP[/]

[]Smaller groups taking on difficult fights are rewarded[/]

[]Overwhelming a few weak enemies with a huge company can give less XP[/]

[]Level scaling is continuous rather than divided into arbitrary brackets[/]

    []Combat animals count as participants[/]

[]Normal Wartales XP bonuses, traits and other modifiers still apply afterward[/]

This is not a blanket XP boost.

Depending on the fight, you may earn considerably more XP, roughly the same amount, or less than in vanilla.

A simple example

Imagine two fights between equal-level characters.

2 mercenaries vs 8 enemies

All 8 enemies contribute to the reward, and that XP pool is shared between only 2 fighters.

Now reverse it:

8 mercenaries vs 2 enemies

Only 2 enemies contribute to the reward, and that smaller pool is divided between 8 fighters.

Vanilla tends to compress the difference between encounters like these because it relies heavily on the overall army-power ratio.

Effort Matters treats them as fundamentally different fights.

And if those 8 enemies are also several levels above your two mercenaries, the reward increases further.

Enemy level matters too

The mod compares the exact average level of both sides.

Equal-level and lower-level enemies use the normal 1. 0× level factor.

Fighting above your level gradually increases XP, reaching the maximum level bonus when the enemy party averages five or more levels above yours.

The scaling is continuous.

A difference of 1. 5 levels is treated as 1. 5 levels rather than being rounded into a +1 or +2 bracket.

Mixed-level enemy groups therefore behave naturally as well.
