Random Customers and Better Customer Visuals

The Problem

• []There's 45 different customers in the base game. There are 31 male customer presets, and 14 female customer presets. You see the same customers over and over again, and with very busy stores, or using some mods, you'll often see multiple copies of the same customer in your store at the same time. Is it a big deal? No. Does it get boring or annoying? Yeah.

  []Some customer models, and especially customer hairstyles, look really terrible sometimes. After digging into the files, I found that most body models, clothes, and hair, don't ever render the highest available quality model, despite those models being included in the game's data.

  The Solution

  • []This mod randomizes customers every time they walk down the street to your store. You'll see lots of similar assets, since there's a limited number of clothing options, hairstyles, etc. But rarely will two customers be exactly the same. Overall things are a lot more varied, and you won't see the same 45 smelly weirdos over and over. You'll get a wide, diverse, randomized, practically infinite variety of smelly weirdos instead!

    []Each customer has their face, weight, height, skin color, hair style, hair color, facial hair, eyebrows, clothes, shoes, and accessories randomized. The face randomization logic is based on an updated version of the character library the game uses (see FAQ), and stays within reasonable parameters, so most customers look fairly natural.

    []This mod is visual only, and doesn't change any actual gameplay aspects, such as the products customers want to buy, cards they have to trade, or how much money they have. As such, it should be compatible with other mods that affect these things. (See below.)

    • []This mod attempts to improve the visual quality of the customers, without too much effort. As stated above, the game only uses the 2nd highest quality models available, for most assets. Some do use the highest, but it's fairly random which assets actually do this.

      []This mod re-enables the high quality assets that are disabled by default.

      []Not all assets are working, mostly hairstyles. Fixed in 1. 1! Everything should be working now. The improvement isn't tremendously high, as the game uses the built-in Unity renderer, which is limited. At the very least, you'll generally see less scalp under weirdly gross thin hair.

    • I haven't seen any major performance impacts from using the better quality models. Your mileage may vary. The high quality bodies, clothes, and hair can all be enabled or disabled individually, without affecting the ability to randomize customers. You can also disable randomization, and get the improved clothing and hair assets applied to the default customers.
