What is Terrain Patcher?

Terrain Patcher is a powerful library mod for Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero that allows anyone to modify the game's terrain. This mod provides essential tools and APIs for other modders to create custom terrain modifications, expand gameplay possibilities, and integrate new features into both games.

Installation

Requirements:

- BepInEx (Required)

Nautilus (Optional but recommended for in-game config menu)

1. Download Terrain Patcher

- if you don't want to download from nexus you can grab the latest release from the (https://github.com/Esper89/Subnautica-TerrainPatcher/releases/latest).

2. Extract the Mod

- Unzip the downloaded file.

- Place the entire `TerrainPatcher` folder (containing `TerrainPatcher.dll`) into your `BepInEx/plugins` directory.

3. Install Patch Files

- To manually install a `.optoctreepatch` file, place it in the `TerrainPatcher/patches` folder.

- You may also put patch files anywhere inside `BepInEx/plugins` or its subfolders; Terrain Patcher will find and load them.

4. (Optional) Configure Patch Load Order

- To customize patch loading order, write the patch file names (without extensions) in `load-order.txt` inside the `TerrainPatcher` folder.

5. (Optional) In-Game Config

- If Nautilus is installed, you can enable/disable patch loading from the in-game configuration menu.

Old Versions

As of the 11th of october 2025 the team at unknown worlds have removed the legacy and march 2023 branches, please use the latest version of terrain patcher.

Deprecated Mods

- Terrain Extender: No longer needed; Terrain Patcher replaces all features. Uninstall Terrain Extender if present.
