QModManager Installation

  • []Download the latest version.[/]

[]Locate your game directory. This varies across systems but some commonly used paths are listed below:

    Steam: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Subnautica

[]Extract the contents of the zip file into your Subnautica directory. You can do this by opening the file and dragging the contents out into your game folder. Alternatively, you can copy the files within and paste them into your game folder.[/]

[]If done correctly, there should be a BepInEx folder directly inside your game directory.[/]

QModManager 4 (Legacy) is a discontinued mod loader for Subnautica, now only compatible with the Steam Legacy Branch after the game's 2.0 update. With 32,520 endorsements and 1.6 million downloads, it was the standard tool for installing mods, but its discontinuation means users must switch to newer alternatives for current versions.

✨ Key Features

Serves as a mod loader for Subnautica, enabling installation and management of mods.
Discontinued as of Subnautica 2.0, now only for the Steam Legacy Branch.
High community adoption with 32,520 endorsements and 1.6 million downloads.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Massive community trust — 32,520 endorsements and 1.6 million downloads show it was the go-to mod loader.
  • Essential for legacy players who want to keep using older mods on the Steam Legacy Branch.
  • Simple to use — drop-in installation and automatic mod detection made it beginner-friendly.

⚠️ Cons

  • Discontinued — no updates since October 2022, so it won't work with Subnautica 2.0+.
  • Only for the Steam Legacy Branch, which is a separate game version that most players won't have.
  • No longer supported by the modding community — new mods are built for QModManager 5 or BepInEx, so you're stuck with old mods.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Subnautica players who deliberately stay on the Steam Legacy Branch and want to keep using classic mods. Skip if you're on the current version — you'll need a different mod loader.
📦 Install:Easy· Under 1 minute

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Make sure you've opted into the Steam Legacy Branch in your game properties, or QModManager won't load.
  • Check that your mods are compatible with QModManager 4 — many older mods may require specific versions.
  • If you're on Subnautica 2.0+, uninstall this and look for QModManager 5 or BepInEx instead.
