📋 About This Mod

There are three different options available here, depending on the performance improvements you're looking for (Hot Potato, Warm Potato, or Cold Potato).

For the Half Resolution version, I've taken nearly every single texture over 512 resolution in the game and downscaled them by half. This includes all types of texture map files. The Quarter Resolution takes those textures one step further. The 1K version only downscales textures that are at 2K or above down to 1K, and excludes all other textures.

INSTALLATION

BA2v3 ARCHIVES (Recommended)

Put the BA2 file directly into the game directory, and you will also need to add the BA2 archive name to the ini file at My Games\Starfield\StarfieldCustom.ini, or Steam\steamapps\common\Starfield\Starfield.ini

Look for the section and at the bottom (under sResourceIndexFileList=Starfield) post the archive name for the file that you are using.

Archive names are listed on the files tab.

Version 3 BA2 archives created with BA2 Upgrader.

LOOSE FILES

Vortex/MO2 Install: this mod should load directly from the game directory

Manual Install: Unzip the mod, then copy the data folder and paste it into Documents/My Games/Starfield, making sure that you also have the appropriate ini edits

MORE INFO

This is the first stage of a multi-step project. It's just a large batch downscale of all textures using Octagon and maintaining the original compression format. It's quick and dirty but it should help a lot with VRAM usage and that's why it's version 0. 1

Future plans as follows:

Stage 2:

Release additional mods with custom resolutions for different types of textures that hit harder than others. Downscaling planets is less effective at increasing performance than downscaling random NPC faces or architecture, and some people want higher resolution faces than landscapes. Multiple modules are more flexible for a variety of users.

Stage 3:

I will be upscaling many vanilla game textures and releasing those for high-end systems. In the process I will also be downscaling those upscaled textures to performance resolutions. From my experience with heavily trained and managed AI uspcaling I can often achieve greater sharpness and clarity than vanilla textures even at the same resolution via this process.

Stage 4:

Updating this AIO pack with the above changes.

Performance Texture Pack - AIO and INI for Loose Files by XilaMonstrr downscales vanilla textures to cut VRAM usage and boost performance. It includes an All-In-One pack and a StarfieldCustom.ini for loose file loading. With 545 endorsements and 21,987 downloads, it's a popular choice for players seeking smoother performance.

✨ Key Features

Downscaled vanilla textures for reduced VRAM usage and improved performance.
All-In-One Pack for easy installation.
Includes StarfieldCustom.ini for loading loose files.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Community-approved with 545 endorsements and nearly 22k downloads.
  • Directly tackles VRAM usage, which is a real bottleneck for many rigs.
  • All-in-one pack means you don't have to juggle multiple files.

⚠️ Cons

  • Downscaling textures means a visual hit—don't expect crisp 4K detail.
  • Only updated in October 2023, so it might not be fully compatible with the latest game patches.
  • Requires loose file loading, which can conflict with other mods that use the same method.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Starfield players on mid-range or older GPUs who want smoother framerates without sacrificing too much visual quality. Also great for anyone tired of stuttering in dense areas. Skip if you're running a high-end rig and want maximum texture fidelity.
📦 Install:Medium· 5-10 minutes

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Make sure to place the StarfieldCustom.ini in your Documents/My Games/Starfield folder, not the game's install directory.
  • If you're using a mod manager, let it handle the loose files to avoid overwriting issues.
  • Test in a busy area like New Atlantis to see the performance gain before committing.
