📋 About This Mod
Version 1. 1 adds 12 more quotes. Tested on Starfield 1. 16. 242. 0 (Free Lanes) and requires no update.
DESCRIPTION
Upon death you'll now be greeted by a quote from a famous philosopher, author or other luminary, allowing you to reflect upon your untimely end. You'll also be able to see who or what killed you, just in case you'd like to get even. There are currently 42 quotes in total, selected randomly, and the mod checks to see if you were killed by a friendly for some reason, or if you died as a result of "poor decisions".
The mod also gives you a setting in gameplay options to disable the Starborn death effect for players in New Game Plus, and an option to disable the quote messages themselves if you'd like a break from them. Gameplay options are stored in your save, so make sure you set them after loading into a game, not before.

CREDITS
This mod was requested by Pretentious_Pairings, and was inspired by the death screens you see in some 8-bit adventure games. They also supplied most of the literary quotes, and have helped with testing for Xbox. Many thanks!
NOTES / TECHNICAL
This mod increases the death cam duration a little to 6 in order for death messages to reliably appear. If you are using any other mod that changes fPlayerDeathReloadTime, if it changes it to less than 6 you will need to place Death Quotes below it in your load order. If you have it set via sStartingConsoleCommand in your StarfieldCustom.ini, again make sure it is set to at least 6.
This mod also edits the vanilla PlayerNGPlusScript script in order to add the gameplay settings option for the Starborn death effect. If you have any other mods that edit this script, the gameplay settings option may not function. For example, if you are using No Starborn effect for player deaths from my miscellaneous small mods, you should remove it.
I'm checking against a formlist of various crime factions in order to determine which NPCs should be regarded as "good guys"; this proved to be the only reliable way to do it as GetFactionReaction, IsHostileToActor and GetShouldAttack all had various quirks, like the result changing if it was your companion who started combat with an NPC. If you get a "good guy" death response for an NPC that should be considered evil, let me know as it's possible I'll need to remove one or more factions from that list or add an exception.

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Simple and effective – adds a touch of personality to death screens.
- Useful for identifying your killer at a glance.
- Optional toggle for the Starborn effect gives players control.
⚠️ Cons
- Small mod with limited endorsements (54) – might not be widely tested.
- Only affects death screens – no other gameplay impact.
- Potential compatibility issues with other mods that alter death sequences or UI.
For players who want a bit of flavor when they die and appreciate knowing what killed them. Also for those who find the Starborn death effect annoying and want to disable it. Skip if you're looking for gameplay overhauls – this is purely cosmetic.
