📋 About This Mod
So this is my first Starfield mod, go easy on me :)
Starfield has great sound design overall, but somehow never accounted for airless environments, which makes sense in a way, since the Space Opera feel probably works better with a full, rich soundtrack everywhere. Still, for those who want a bit more immersion, it always felt like something was missing.
This mod runs a detection system in the background that adjusts the audio mix based on where you are. Inside a sealed station or your ship, everything sounds normal. Step outside onto an airless surface and the mix shifts, sounds become muffled, like you're out there in a suit with limited audio feedback. Airlocks are handled properly too, so the transition happens at the right moment.
It's not trying to be a hardcore realism overhaul. The effect is a muffling of the audio mix, nothing more. Getting more precise effects would require deeper access to Wwise and Starfield's Init bank, which isn't really viable without breaking things.
No SFSE required.
Works great with >> Real O2
This is still a work in progress ! Not all scenarios have been tested, space battles in particular. If you run into something weird or have suggestions, feel free to leave a post. I'll have a look when I get the time and adjust if it makes sense.

v1. 04. 1 is here
Hey everyone, sorry for the wait on this one > this update turned out to be more involved than expected under the hood.
What's new:
-
[]Xbox / Bethesda Creations compatibility > The mod is now fully packaged as ESM + BA2, no loose files needed. A conflict deep in how Starfield loads Wwise audio at startup was preventing the mod from working correctly in BA2 format. That's been resolved by removing a dependency on the Init bank entirely. Should work for Ps5 also, not tested. [/]
[]Helmet cosmetic hide fix > When the helmet muffle option is enabled, the mod now correctly checks whether the helmet is actually visible, not just equipped. If you use the "auto-hide helmet in breathable areas" option, the muffling and breathing sounds will no longer trigger incorrectly. The logic is simple: hidden helmet = no effect.[/]
[]Gendered breathing audio > The breathing system now uses separate male/female audio assets, selected automatically when the helmet seals.[/]
[]Fixes from bug reports, thanks for those:
[]Physics object hit sounds were not unmuffling properly when back in atmosphere[/]
[]Popping sounds on various transitions[/]
[]Landing sounds were not muffled correctly in no-atmosphere environments[/]
[]Also, rev8 should be properly muffled now[/]

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community-approved with 555 endorsements and 30k downloads
- Fills a real gap—Starfield's default audio is barebones in space
- Simple concept, big immersion payoff for explorers
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated May 2026—may not be compatible with future patches
- Only affects audio, so if you want visual or gameplay changes, this isn't it
For Starfield players who crave deeper immersion and notice the lack of sound in space. If you're a roleplayer or explorer who spends time on airless moons and derelict ships, this mod adds a layer of realism. Skip if you're after visual overhauls or gameplay tweaks—this is purely audio.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since it's an audio mod, make sure your in-game sound settings aren't muted or set to low volume for ambient effects.
- Check the mod's file structure—if it uses a .esp or .esm, place it in your Data folder and enable it in the game's mod list.
- If you're using a mod manager like Vortex, let it handle the install to avoid manual file placement errors.
