📋 About This Mod

LE Version HERE

Based on user feedback I've reworked most of the voices in the mod to better reflect the original voice types and reduce the intensity and volume where appropriate.

Existing users can download the 'voices only' file in optional files and overwrite the existing sound folder, the ESP has not been changed.

Ever wondered why the NPCs in Dawnstar say they're having nightmares every night, but never do? Well now they do. Until you've completed the quest 'Waking Nightmare', NPCs in Dawnstar will have a chance to have a nightmare, with (some) Dawnstar specific reactions from other NPCs.

Once you complete that quest, Dawnstar residents will stop having nightmares.

All vanilla voiced NPCs in the Dawnstar location will randomly have nightmares while they're asleep. Every vanilla voice type is covered with their own unique nightmare sound, with varying length, intensity and volume. NPCs added by other mods will automatically work if they use a vanilla voice type.

Whenever an NPC is asleep, they will have a chance to have a bad dream and cry out in their sleep, with other NPCs nearby reacting.

The dreams have a random (configurable) chance of triggering every few hours in-game. The default chance is 50%, so every few hours, there will be a 50% chance of hearing a nightmare.

You can alter the random chance by opening up the console and typing set jb1dreams to x - where x is the number you want. For example if you want 25% chance type set jb1dreams to 25 - the game will save this so you only need to do it once. If you want to see what the current percentage is type help jb1dreams in the console.

The mod is flagged as ESL so it won't take up a slot in your load order and is a very lightweight mod.

The mod was made with the older creation kit so is compatible with all versions of Skyrim SE/AE.

There's a vanilla bug with new dialogue sometimes not firing after installing a mod. If you don't hear any dialogue, just make a save and load it which should fix this if you encounter it.

Install like any other mod using your favourite mod manager. It is safe to install mid-game.

It should be compatible with pretty much anything.

What do you mean by 'every few hours?' - This is a branch of my other mod 'Nightmares of Skyrim'. In the original mod there are two chances of nightmares, one for all Skyrim and one for Dawnstar. This mod contains both but will only trigger in Dawnstar. The genera

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

This immersion mod adds nightmares and NPC reactions exclusively in Dawnstar, active only before the Waking Nightmare quest is completed. ESL flagged for efficient load order integration. A focused, lore-friendly enhancement for players who want atmospheric dread in that specific hold.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Community-approved with 457 endorsements and nearly 384k downloads
  • Tightly scoped to Dawnstar, so it won't affect the rest of your game
  • ESL flag means it won't eat your mod slot limit

⚠️ Cons

  • Only affects Dawnstar, so if you want nightmares across Skyrim, this isn't it
  • Last updated in October 2024, so it may not be compatible with future game patches
🎯 Is This For You?
For Skyrim players who want a focused, lore-friendly horror touch in Dawnstar without overhauling the whole game. Perfect for roleplayers who enjoy atmospheric dread before the Waking Nightmare quest. Skip if you want nightmares everywhere or if you've already completed that quest on your current playthrough.
📦 Install:Easy· Under 1 minute

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Since it's ESL flagged, you can safely add it to an existing save without worrying about load order conflicts.
  • Make sure you haven't completed the Waking Nightmare quest yet, or you won't see the effects.
  • If you use a mod manager, just download and activate; no manual file placement needed.
