Backstory by Ennion3

Gasping for breath, holding onto a floating piece of wooden wreckage for dear life, Maryanne Welles bobbed to the surface of the storm-lashed sea.  Her long brown hair streaming down her face and obscuring her vision, her lungs pumping like bellows, the young woman from Whiterun sucked in several deep breaths of lifegiving air before another roller crashed over her, sending her back underwater.  As her head broke the surface once again the pretty little brunette sucked in another big breath.  From the moment that she'd been swept over the side of the wallowing Minnow, she'd been praying to the Nines, begging one of them to save her from drowning.  Because the ocean water was cold, she was just as afraid of dying from hypothermia as she was of drowning.  It was getting harder and harder for her to hang onto the wooden whatever-it-was that she'd found by sheer luck. There was no way that she'd have been able to remain afloat while wearing her shoes, dress, and enchanted dagger.  Thank the Nines, she was a strong swimmer.  But, oh!  How tired she was!

Oh, dear! she thought helplessly as yet another bolt of forked lightning bolt that suddenly jolted across of the rain-lashed, cloud-covered sky.  Suddenly, she was swept under by another wave.  As with all the other times before, she had no idea how deeply she'd been pushed down by the force of the wave.  Struggling mightily, clinging to her large chunk of wooden wreckage, she held her breath for a long time.  Her arms were getting tired and her grip was growing weaker all the time.  Desperate to live, she kicked her small feet in an effort to propel herself back to the surface.  Once again, her brain began to scream at her for oxygen, demanding that she breathe.  But she dare not, for she was still underwater.

Eventually, her head broke the surface of the rain-lashed sea!  Reacting quickly, she expelled her oxygen-depleted breath and gulped in a huge breath of lifegiving air.  And another one!  As she weakly clung to her makeshift life preserver she resumed her whimpered pleading, calling out to the most-likely of the Nines.  "Save me, Arkay!  Please, Stendarr!  Save me!  Please, Kynareth!  Save me!"

It was black-dark when she awoke and found herself cold and soaking wet and sprawled face down on the wet sand, her sodden shoes being lapped by the retreating waves.  Unconscious but instinctively clinging to the wooden whatever-it-was, she'd luckily and eventually been washed ashore. "Thank you, Arkay!  Thank you, Stendarr!  Thank you, Kynareth!" she whispered between wracking coughs that brought up gouts of seawater, her voice weak and reedy.  Fortunately the storm h
